umm 225 is what 7.5" ? if so the widest rim you can fit on the back with the stock offset is like 7", i took my car to les schwabs and they test fit some rims and the 7.5" hit the tire well

They will not fit unless you have a rim with just the right offset. My 205/60R13 rear tires rub slightly on stock rims. But I don't know if anyone has noticed this, but the rear fenders on the 84-85 I think are wider. I parked my 82 next to what I think was an 84 or 85 and the rear fenders were quite a bit different. If you look at the 82 fenders, the body line is smooth right down. Doesn't have an extra lip like the front. On the 84-85 cars, they have this lip effectively making the rear fenders about an inch wider.

225s work fine on a 7 inch rim, though 8 inch is more ideal. Offset is critical in any application. One other thing to keep in mind is the difference between nominal and actual size: 225 is just the named width; the actual width will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, as well as tire model to tire model. Nobody sells a 223.5/54R15.99 tire. One nominal 225/55R16 tire may fit while another does not. Also, this is the section width (widest point of the carcass); not tread width. Some 205mm nominal tires have just as much "meat" on the road as a 225mm nominal size, so you can get good fitment with no loss of contact patch.
So why 225/55R16? That sounds a bit tall for a 225 section width for our purposes. My old 2nd gen came with 205/55R16s and the "correct" plus size was 225/50R16, to maintain a similar circumfrence. I believe the 3rd gen also came with 50-series 225s. It's probably no big deal as long as they fit, but I would have erred on the small side for gearing sake.
