Wide Band Worth It????
I am going to be running a 48 DHLA Dellorto on a Streetport 12a. I have been wanting to get a wideband for tuning.
The question is not which one, its more of do I really need this.
I want one, that way I can get the most out of my car. I spend the money getting it streetported, and buying an aftermarket carb & Exhaust. I have been talking to my friend james(SonicRat) He says I really dont need one once I get the jets right and idle set im good to go, that I dont have to be right on like a turbo application.
Its not that I think he is wrong, I just want to know other people opinion on this subject. Have you tried to tune without a wideband then got a wideband and noticed a difference in tuning abilitys and power?
Also, I am looking into getting one that can datalog. I should be able to hook into my coil and get the RPM's then go back and see what AFM im running at what RPM.
The reason I ask, is im a broke college student, and I cant really afoord to be buying something that is really not worth the money.

They are nice, but worth-it, depends on money. Also, with a non turbo rotary, you are much less likely to detonate if you miss-tune the carb. That gives you a good cusion to fall back on when doing trial and error tuning.
At the very least, they are a legitimate tuning tool, they DO work....unlike narrow band meters or those stupid clear sparkplugs....
They are getting cheaper, but its not hard to tune a carb by feel,trial-and-error and plug reading.Think of it as a shortcut that can provide you the answers quicker and can also provide continuous info while you drive, much like ancillary gauges....and like those gauges, itll be cool and interesting for a while, but eventually you wont want or need to look at it all the time. But if a fuel pump or flter or something goes awry, the wideband can point you in the right direction quicker,to get the problem fixed.
If you want to "lean tune" for maximum power or are **** about perfect carb tuning, then by all means go for it.There are several out there in the $300 range that are good, some are standalone and some are laptop compatible.Seeing as how you are running a carb, the self contained standalone should be ideal.

Well, he didn't include some of what I said, particularlly he could borrow his friendly neighborhood broken rx7 owners wideband unit, which would allow him to set it up exactly how he wants, then after that there's really no need for it again, so it's hard to justify $300 for something you'll only use once (at this moment, unless he goes with something else in the future).
