You want DIY, try surplus for cool parts to start with
Sign modules for 8.95: http://www.goldmine-elec-products.co...p?number=G9987
Smaller 2 colour with yellow and red, modules for 1.99: http://www.bgmicro.com/LED1054.aspx
These would be fairly easy to mount in whatever pattern you wanted, I would think.
10000 Mcd red LEDs, 0.49 each: http://www.goldmine-elec-products.co...?number=G16257
3.75 Lumen red LEDs, 0.39 each http://www.goldmine-elec-products.co...?number=G16750
Very similar LEDs, also 0.39 each http://www.bgmicro.com/LED1198.aspx
These you're basically coming up with your own matrix and controller. Definitely the most flexible way to do this.
Easy way, 15 3/4"x 2" stick on strips for 27.75 http://www.bgmicro.com/LEDCHLSR.aspx
- I'm not sure these are really quite bright enough, but if you used more than one strip maybe....
