sweet man! as far as getting the rest of that rubber out, you may want to consider a scratch remover compound (basiclly a mild abrasive like you said). I had a friend whose car was brushed against by an suv tire, leaving similar tire "scuffs". I used a compound called GS-27 and it pulled out the rubber scuffs, leaving the car one colour. Anyway, worth a shot. I got mine at walmart, there are other brands of scratch removers as well. good job on that header panel!

Thanks Bliffle, Hades and Landon, I'll give that scratch remover a try. At least the car looks a lot better than it did and it's not such an embarrassment to drive to work.
But to do it right I will really need to replace at least the header panel and probably the hood and bumper, which also have damage that goes beyond the tire tread marks. Thanks Matt for looking into this, if I could get some matching white original paint that would be great!

I always try chemicals before abrasion. Start with soapy water, then alcohol, then lacquer thinner. Abrasion will certainly mar the area around the rubber marks as well as the rubber, but usually the well-seasoned paint is impervious to mild chemicals. And the first abrader I use is plastic, like those 3M scouring pads for the kitchen.
