Why is this car is so hated?

Thats new to me.......Ive never heard of that car being hated!
Sure, it wont appeal to everyone's sense of style and taste, but it was built back when those big Supra wings were in vouge.
Whether or not you like the stock lines of the 1st gen,or the muscular bulk of a widebody,I think the important aspects of a custom car should be...
1.Is it original.......YES
2.Is it a quality job.....YES
3.Does it have the ***** to back up the looks.....YES
That car was my inspiration while building up my turbo, widebody monster.I didnt go as far with the one-off bodywork as he did,but Ive grown to like the widebody, big wing look.
And Cosmicbang, your absolutely right about traction issues.Theres no way in hell I could have lived with current HP levels while running 205 wide tires!!!!245's can barely keep it locked down.

But yeah, your car did look very nice, and had no lack of traction.

I don't like body kits on 1st gen RX-7's. And here is why, it adds weight. If it looks good, its fine, but it only attracts more "attention" and is that why your doing it? Finally, unless its upgraded to some significantly more power->Turbo rotor powered, V8'd, or something to go way beyond stock hp or bolt ons, the horsepower of the 12a or GSL-SE engines with only asperiated mod's are not going to need any additional downforce.
I'll take a functionality upgrade long before I consider adding "fat" to the car to try to move down the road.
BTW, when is there going to be a "sticky" regarding this purple car. Just leave it at the top and that'll take care of the well known purple car.

Sorry to bring back the dead I just was curious why it seemed like everyone hated the car.
I just wanted to see what the hell the term "purple car" meant .
Sorry for the frustration!

Im with evil............I thought the reson for buying these things are to hold on to the older and innovative stying that made it a classic in the first place. The WHOLE CAR is a classic, not just the unique powerplant.

Nevertheless one could in truth say a car never driven faster than 35 mph does not need these things. But then it becomes a choice of the driver. Likewise, if you do not want attention, then do not drive a sports car.

If I have to explain my point to you, then I am waisting my time. But, in short, I was showing that an FB can still be true to its original styling and perform well even in a racing environment.
Those two pure, purpose built race cars are very nice specimens as well...unlike the purple abomination.

I'm under the impresion after racing around a ~1.5mile road course(were speeds don't exceed 100mph or just touch at it) designed for training state troopers/police, unless you are going over 100mph in the FB/SA, the wings are really not very useful...Therefore, on the street were roads are mostly straight and speeds are under 90mph even on most freeways were people only can get away with 90mph sustained, its just not going to do much. However, when we are talking about tracks were speeds are above 90mph or more like 100-120mph with curves, "functional" wings like the ones shown on those examples of race versions will actually be good then in my opinion. So my saying is wing have a useful place-on the track.

Aerodynamics 101
I have a couple of degrees in Aeronautical Engineering, and several friends who are expert aerodynamicists. They all agree with me that spoilers on street cars are useless gimmicks, made for sale to ignorant yuppies and teenagers. Unless you plan to spend a lot of time at speeds well in excess of 100 mph, a spoiler will have no benefit whatsoever. The rest of the body looks nice, but why not just buy a 944 - they are cheap enough now. Somebody put a huge amount of labor into that body. I would know, I have been there, done that.
As for keeping the look of the 80s in the RX-7, I went the other way, trying for the 60s Italian look, with chrome bumpers, etc. And it is all Mazda parts. Some of you may have seen my red convertible, shown on the third page of this site:

I am with wackyracer (as usual) if it isn't fuctional, it doesn't need to be there. SOme one on here keeps ravign about a PC-based sound system with makes me cringe.
I know I know, personal opinion, whatever.
Anyway, i doubt any of you remember this, but a few years ago on this forum we had a nOObie that claimed this car was his.... he was a real douche-bag, ricer, poster spaming little brat.
he was here for a while harassingand threatening all of the 1st gen folks, until we banned him.
