Unhappy Why always me!!!????

Ok, I know some of you have went through this, but I have a HUGE dilema on my hands. My 7 is giving me yet more problems.

Ok, lets start from the beginning. I was looking for a 7 that I could put some money into (no more than $1000) to get running. I looked at a few and they all were ****. Then I came across this one black 82 GSL. Body looked good, and all it seemed to need was a new gas tank. I bought it for $500. Well, to make a long story short, I probably would have been better off paying $1700 for a GSL-SE that was smashed up. So far I have put over $3000 into the car, and I still have yet to keep it on the road more than a week. Insurance was the biggest killer, but most of the time it was a day here a day there for a total of 3 weeks over the period of 4 months due to problems coming up.

Now I have what I think is a MAJOR problem that will lead to the death of my engine. There also seems to be some trans problems because its been getting steadily harder to shift. The trans is to the point that if I am shifting fast, it won't go into second gear. I also hear a knocking sound when I let off the gas and downshift. But back to the engine problem. The last time I had it on the road, which was 2 weeks ago, I decided to try to find the top speed. Well, at about 5500 rpm in 3rd gear, the engine just seems to die untill I let off. This is at WOT only. Then just a few minutes later, stupid me decides I will use WOT from 3000 rpm in first. Well, I miss shift into second due to the tranny problems, grind the gears and go to about 8500 rpm. I finally get it in 2nd and a HUGE plume of blue smoke follows me. went away right away, but still can't be good.

Now, today I decide to start the car for the first time in 2 weeks. I let it warm up and it idles like it usually does. The only difference this time though is that blue smoke is coming out the tailpipe the WHOLE 10 minutes I ran the car. It was worse when I put a load on the engine.

Now, to sum up the problems that I have no money to fix, I have to redo the exhaust (fear of going deaf at the moment), fix an oil leak on the rear oil cooler banjo bolt, try to find out why my accelerator pump doesn't work, then fix it, find out why the car bogs at 5500 rpm in 3rd at WOT then fix it, then all I have to do is baby the car all the time because I fear something else is going to break. Oh yeah, I also have problems with power. I tried to do a burnout to show my friend that the car really could do it, but all it did was bog down like it didn't have nearly enough power to do it.

All in all, I am pissed off and almost crying at the same time. I have over $3000 into a car that I can't drive, fear to drive when I do, and I only planned on paying $3000 TOTAL for a good running car in good condition. What I have is a 30 footer that has exhaust problems and doesn't seem to have much power. I don't have a daily driver of my own like I was supposed to have by now. I just don't know if I should sell it for what its worth and get another one that I KNOW is in good condition, or if I should keep it and keep putting money into it.

Also, one more thing, I know for a fact that I am going to have problems in the winter with this car, engine wise.

sounds like your oil control ring seals are toast, now you're lookin at a rebuild

you can probably get by for quite awhile though, just keep adding oil at every fillup, thats what i do, i would say my 83 is really reliable...just burns a bunch of oil!

as for the tranny, i get the same kind of problems, i have some redline gear oil on the way, and i've heard that redline will help cure a bunch of grinding and shifting issues, i guess we'll see with that one

dont give up on her yet

So one thing at a time, thats how you tame this. Wuts up with the exhaust? Have you hollowed the cats? Or at least inspected them to see if they are collapsed/clogged? NM I just read your siggie. Teh 3" exhaust is why you have no burnout power. Live with it till you can get a good system in it. But at least fix the leaks. C0 poisoning is cumulative, meaning you have a finite level you can absorb, after that itll make you sick for weeks everytime you smell any.

Get a carb kit and fix that ap. If your that desperate PM me and Ill send u a good used one out of one I rebuilt for someone else (I save everything, and this is why). Have you changed your fuel filter?

Wuts the cause of the oil leak? Crush washers? Fitting? Hose?

Save a few $ for a used transmission and solve that headache.

Blue smoke is oil smoke. Your oil seals are starting to leak a little (common after over revving) or tyour OMP is gone whacko.

Suck it up soldier! You can fix this. And dont talk bad about Nikki. Shes dead sexy.

Hey man Carl can tell you I've had loads of problems one after another I constantly and I mean constantly blow smoke just keep an eye on your oil and you'll be fine. Try having a smoke screen even James Bond gets Jealous of after letting your car idle fro about 5 minutes. I mean BLAM! smoke everywhere.
Sounds like you might be running lean at WOT at high RPMS. Guess what, don't do it so often. Easy fix on that part. Or if you want to fix it save up money OVER TIME IT WILL HAPPEN and get yourself a Holley red, I'm sure thats all those need.
Oil Cooler leak, cry me a river I got it too and yes it is annoying but look at it and study where the leak is coming from. It could be worse kid ok. My OMP and my oil cooler are leaking. Oh yea Carl the OMP is now leaking. LOL.
And don't even get me started on exhaust noise ok. Anyone thats heard my car covers their ears while I'm driving. I get headaches cause its so loud.
I put over a 1K into my car on repairs.
Oh yea **** Carl I'm just gonna go ahead and rebuild the carb I think I might as well its starting to need it.
Don't give up on her. How would you feel if someone gave up on you. The car has feelings too.

Lack of power in 3rd gear at WOT is most likely due to a dirty fuel filter. That's by far the most common cause and only takes about ten minutes to fix. Sounds like a good (cheap) place to start. Good luck, and hang in there!

Check your fuel filter as suggested, and listen to these guys. Theyve helped me MORE than once on all levels of owning one of these things. You sound like youre about as lucky as me, lol

Ok guys. I've had time to think things over. I started with some exhaust work to help get things quieter. This custom exhaust has just caused more headaches than its worth. While I was under there, I noticed my fuel filter was full of rust (its see through). The gas tank is new, but I used water to test the capacity of it (its a modified tank from a geo tracker) and I got some rust in the tank. The fuel filter was new when I put the car on the road, so I right away disregarded that as an option. I've got a new filter so that proble should get fixed really soon.

The oil cooler itself doesn't leak. Its the rear banjo bolt where it connects to the engine. I just need a new crush washer. I took a look at the AP, and it turns out that I might have to take the carb off the engine and check that all the passeges are clean. Seeing as how much rust was in the fuel filter, it is possible that some got by and clogged some passeges in the AP circuit. So thats getting cleaned some time this week.

Since I have the money, I think I am going to just go with a RB system (except the muffler to save some money). Header and middle section shouldn't cost much more than $400. I've got an N1 style muffler comming WITH a silencer insert (hopefully will to the trick). If not, I will do some modifications to the silencer.

As for the tranny, I'm going to change the fluid since I don't know when it was changed last. I'm going to attemt to find some Redline 75W90 or something like that. But thanks for the help guys. I just got a new job (the day after I posted my sadness), so I've got some good money coming in that can be dedicated to the 7. $1000 worth actually.

Oh yeah, one more thing. That burnout and the high speed run was the first I had ever tried to do in my car. Most of the time its just easy driving. But It might help to mention that I am running 205/60 series BFG radial T/A's on the rear. I don't know if thats preventing me from doing a standing burnout.

Ok, checked out the price of the exhaust parts, and I think I might just replace the parts in my exhaust that are 3" with 2 1/4" piping. It'll be cheaper and have the same effect.

Tell me what you think of this. Road race dissassembled header, custom collector to single exhaust, 18" long magnaflow muffler, 2 1/4" piping over the axle, N1 style muffler with silencer installed. I think it will give me the performance I want and be quiet enough at the same time.

TIP: Do not and I repeat do not put the silencer in. Get ear plugs soething anyting. Because of the shooting flames and silencer in it, my muffler just broke in two by the force of the flame.

You know what, I'll risk blowing the muffler apart. Its not like it cost me much to get. it was $20 on ebay.
