Who has has had serious idle problems w/stock Nikki?

I'm trying to educate myself about a Nikki component through everyone elses experience.

The component is the Altitude Idle Compensation Valve, of which I had previously thought a relatively stable part.
I'm entertaining a theory that perhaps they do malfunction, and that many idle inconsistancies can be attributed to that.

So if I could have your vote regarding idle problems with altitude comps. in place v.s. idle problems with them removed, on stock 12as in particular, it may further cement my suspicions.

Thanks all.

I didn't vote, cause I've never really had a serious idle problem that wasn't caused by some maladjustment on my part. Even then, I wouldn't consider them serious, cause it was usually just a matter of idle mixture/speed balancing.

I had one break as I was messing with it once on an old 79 I used to have. I don't remember it making a huge difference, but I did end up buying a new one from mazdatrix. I've since learned better.

I'm talking 'scratch your head and say "WTF?!" out loud' bad... where no adjustment would fix it.

Altitude Idle Comp. valve is the large metal bulb attached to the backside of the top of the carb. It has a hard plastic moulded line that wraps around the carb going to a nipple on the throttle body above the mixture screw.

I still have that. Should it have left with the rats?

How important is this thing? I'm at 5000 ft so if I get one of those blickity blamo supper upgraded carbs is this a part that I need to make sure is not upgraded to the garbage can? Oh and my car idles like hell until it gets warm I like to blame this on a nasty vacuum leak that I hope to take care of with the rats nest removal now you have me wondering....

No-no...if you have it, leave it. It does not hamper performance, and does very little until you change altitudes.

...Apparently, it's also not the source of many idle problems, either!

Im dating myself, but in the words of the infamous Rossana Anna Danna, "Never-mind!"
