white smoke is bad, right??

when i first start my car, it spews out a TON of white smoke. Now, i know they're supposed to spew smoke when they start, but i think I heard somewhere that if it emits white smoke, it needs to be rebuilt. Is this true, and what seals am i gonna need to fix it?

Not if the smoke is white. I would 1st check the intake manifold gasket and o rings.

I wouldn't worry about it...my '79 (bought new in 1978) has smoked white smoke on startup since day one. The cold start assist squirts antifreeze into the carb on cold startups, which causes white smoke and a hell of a smell. I wouldn't do anything to it unless the white smoke continues after startup.

Cold Start Assist squirts anitfreeze into the carb??????? I thought, you are suppose to use starting fluid or something like that in the cold start assist reservior. It better not be antifreeze in yours!!!

Anyhow, I have my cold start assist removed. The weather here in San Francisco Bay Area never get cold enough for it.

The start assist fluid is a glycol and water mix.

White smoke means we have a new pope.

Yes, you are SUPPOSED to have antifreeze in there. If its below zero out, its squirts some antifreeze into the carb to prevent frosting when you go to start the car. Works quite well (if yours still works, mine didn't so I took it out).

The attachment is straight from the 1985 service manual...so it BETTER BE antifreeze!
