white "haze" smoke. (searched)

hey all, so lately ive been getting lots of smoke at start up. itll easily blanket the block. it lingers in the air and its pretty thick. thick as in you can walk into it and choke on it and feel its presence on you. i thought it was an oil seal problem but its more white than blue. im still driving my car hard and if it is an oil seal problem i should be blowing smoke at higher rpm's too shouldnt i? which im not. started happening after a hard drive at autoX.

more symptoms:
my idle is fine (about 780)
stalls occasionally (also often under hard braking)
gas mileage have been getting worse than before
oil consumption is somewhat normal. (half quart per 3-4 weeks)
all my power is there.

my mods:
stock carb, have not rebuild
holley fuel regulator set at about 3.4? psi
carter fuel pump (100gpm 8psi max)
alumi flywheel
rb exhaust
k&n filter

reason why i ask is because i really have no idea how carbs work so id like to know if that is the reason for the problem before i start thinking of replacing the motor. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have a bad coolant seal. The engine fills up while not running, then when you start it up it has to clean itself out again...

How does it run when it first starts and is smoking? Does it sound like it's skipping?

yes. it does seem like its skipping. could be the coolant but doesnt really smell like it. i want to believe that its a carb issue...is it possible that fuel is leaking into the engine to cause all that smoke? accelerator pump possible?

some more details i can add is that it smokes only when its cold, clears up when warm. floods when driving hard/braking hard...i have to neutral drop and rev it up to clear it up not to stall.

Sounds like the engine coolant rubber seals. Do a search on here, plenty of info on it. even how to plug them up with brass freeze plugs. Good luck!

A flooding carb won't cause white smoke. Extra fuel makes black or very dark gray smoke.

Yeah, if it was fuel then you'd know it. Eyes would be burning for sure... How's your coolant level? How do the plugs look?

I have a 84 GSLSE and its seems we have the same problem, if Im accelerating hard and get off it the gas to break it will not drop to a idle, it cuts off. I also get white smoke at start up but only started happened in the cold weather. After it warms up no white smoke but i still have the problem of it dying if Im hard on the gas and get off the break vs down shifting

Woodonastick, check the radiator for bubbles, if none found, the intake o-rings may be failing. What does the smoke smell like and what are you running for coolant mix.

thegemini, smoke during startup in cold weather is normal, to a point. If it goes away once warm, don't sweat it. Dying on decell, check your shutter valve. Damn sharp 7 you have there,
