what's a pre-silencer and how to lower the noise?

OK, first I apologize for my lack of knowledge of exhaust systems. Here's what I've got. 84 GSL 12A with a RB header, then straight pipe to a ?brand single out muffler. This thing is loud and tinny, what can I do to lower the noise? I know some responses with be to buy a RB muffler, however due the price and the fact that my current exhaust performs OK and is practically brand new, I would like to find a cheaper solution. What is a pre-silencer and is this a possible solution?

A presilencer is basically a small volume, straight-through muffler placed far up in the exhaust path, effectively managing the more "tinny" sounds; not really lowering overall noise levels.

yeah i agree that RB mufflers r high but nothing else will reduce the noise or stand up to the exhaust temps of rotarys than their Primaflow mufflers. i have their complete system for streetport and i know how loud it use to be with just header and stock muffler. i was very impressed how much quieter it is with the addition of the presilencers and primaflow muffler. i am curious tho as to how it would sound without the presilencers, but i got the system from a friend and it's all welded together so they would have to be cut out and replacement pipe welded in so i guess i'll be waiting on that for awhile. if i had it to do over, i'd get the muffler first and see how it sounded and then get presilencers later if needed.

Presilencers are double-walled exhaust sections; pipe-within-a-pipe-thing.
