This should help:
Change the oil to 10w-40 or 20w-50 conventional
New oil filter
New fuel filter
Replace all 4 spark plugs with NGK's
Get new spark plug wires
Distributor cap and rotor replacement
Replace transmission fluid with 75w-90
Replace rear differential fluid with 75w-90
Flush the old coolant out and replace it with distilled water/coolant 50/50

That'll make it feel like a million bucks

Once those things are done you should be good to start worrying about exhaust headers, full exhaust systems, intake modifications, Nikki carb mods, emissions delete, etc.

^ that's exactly what I did to my 83. Knock out the basic mainteance stuff first, them maybe upgrade bushings, shocks and springs.

As far a performance I have a rb carb, custom header and exhaust and like the setup.

Ignition is a good upgrade. Rotaries respond well to direct fire.
