Whatever needs to be worked one should be the first to be worked on. If you have old suspension, I say do that. If the engine is shot, do that first. Whatever needs replaced, do that first. You can't skimp on anything. Its all extremely important.

Before spending money you better start a plan on the attack method.

Grammar and SENTENCE STRUCTURE. I got lost 15 times trying to read that nonsense. I then gave up.

Wow. What the hell was I on when I made my original comment?

What I meant to say was - work on the things that are broken first, and then worry about performance. You can kill to birds with one stone if you have horrible suspension by upgrading your suspension rather than just replacing it with stock components. If your engine is shot and you need to have it rebuilt, then you can port it while it is torn apart.

If you go about upgrading things before fixing the things that are already broken, or worn out to the point of needing to be replaced you will find yourself in a lot more trouble than what you want to be in. Take for example - you want to have more power so you buy a rebuild kit with porting templates (which will set you out over 1,000 dollars), and then your brakes go out but your spare 1,000 dollars was spent on a rebuild kit and you don't have the money to fix your brakes because of it.

Fix what needs to be fixed before moving on to upgrading your car, or upgrade it because some of the parts need to be replaced first. Worry about power gains and things of that nature after all other bugs are worked out of the car.

Very well stated Glitch. While most of the newbs come here asking for performance upgrades, they forget that reliability and safety come first. These are 20 year old cars that have often been neglected, not 5-10 year old Hondas that one can simply do go fast bolt ons and be done.

As long as the engine, drivetrain and body are useable, brakes and suspesion should be the first upgrades. Once those are taken care of, then the hp upgrades can make better, safer use of them. Many seem to forget that these are sports cars, not drag cars. There is nothing sporty about iffy brakes or tired, worn out suspension.

Well, after having my brakes on my '83 go out on me three times and all three times for different reasons, I thought to myself, "maybe upgrading parts for performance shouldn't be priority right now..." haha.

Of course it has been over a year now since I replaced all the brake components on that car. Too bad I didn't get to drive it much longer afterwards because the engine was leaking oil so badly. That car still had far too many things wrong with it, though. I had to get another one, and now I am losing my *** trying to buy everything to get the '83 back to how I feel it should be before hitting the streets again, and that is before even buying anything to replace the engine and transmission in it (and that means TII swap, bigger brakes, better suspension, etc. etc. etc.). Because of my plans for that car, along with buying a house and another car, I'm currently debating on whether or not I want to seriously sell it. I don't have the money for two rx7's right now, and my '84 has proven to be an overly reliable car for the past nine months without any problems at all, so perhaps my '83 will find a new home. I need to make room for a new daily driver, anyway.

Make a plan. People have crazy ideas for their cars, including myself, but few make a plan to actually get it done. When I bought my 84 RX-7 I had a simple goal, to break into the 13's for under $2000 spent total. Right now I'm sitting around 14.8 and have $1280 spent (including the cost of the car). This winter I hope to get it running better, optimize the power band with carb tuning, and pickup a set of slicks..... spinning 225's going into third just won't cut it.

What part of OR are you in?

Not bad advice for a 'newb'. lol. What are your mods so far? I suspect that by the time you are done with exhaust and carb upgrades, you will find yourself shy of breaking into the 13's, even with a streetport. A power adder may be needed for your goal.

I could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time. I already have one error for the last 24 hours.
