What is the oil filler tower port for?

I've had my car ('79) for a while. I wondered why there was a little tube sticking out the rearward side of the oil filler pipe. I figured that maybe it was some kind of vent for condensation or something.

My point is my engine does not have anything hooked up to this port. Is there supposed to be something there?

*** NOTE: the following is a "frothy oil" story. ***

Two weekends ago I checked the oil and it was fine. It was about 1/4 the way down the hashed marks but okay. I made a mental note to get some oil.

This week I went and checked my oil. The dipstick is kind of sticky. Kind of foamy. I open the oil cap and see a bunch of frothy gunk all over. I have been told that this means there is water in the oil.

Of course my heart sank a bit. The coolant looks okay. ie it's green and doesn't look strange.

We have had a couple cold mornings and I have gone out to find the entire car covered in frost. (Not just the windows, the whole car. I wish I had taken a picture.) I thought maybe some cold air got in through the filler column port and frost formed on the inside of the filler pipe. Then as the engine warmed up the frost melted and I got water in the oil.

The other thing is lately I only drive it 10-15 minutes twice a day. I let it warm up for 5-10 minutes, at least long enough for it to idle without the choke pulled.

The last day I checked and it looked fine I had just driven over an hour and pushed it a bit faster than maybe I should have. (Hypothetically a bit of that trip was at a bit over 100 mph. Mmm, three lane divided highway with nearly no one around.)

I bought new oil (waiting on a new oil filter) and will be changing the oil as soon as possible. I figure I will change the oil and keep an eye on it for a few weeks.

Thanks for the post skrewloose78!

I've been *way* to busy at work for the past couple weeks and haven't been around the forum.

Update: of course I had checked the FAQ for thinks like "oil" "filler" "tube", etc.
