My car is near mint.... but I live in Canada and near mint means that even *it* has a small rust hole!

my floor wasnt bad, but I had a quarter as bad as that, a rocker as bad as that, and inside the bins was a LOT worse. as long as thats all you have to worry about, I mean as long as the subframe and all the suspension mounts are still solid, you'll be fine, especially since your family are in the business. You could start with a "better" candidate, BUT you have to means to save an rx7, let the rust free ones go to the guys that cant do bodywork, we'll rescue the dying ones :]

WOW mine is just as bad in almost exactly the same spots. I was thinking about crushing it, but then i decided that I was the only person who can revive this little beast. And by not doing my part to bring it back to life, I am no better than those piston rodders who vulture salvage yards.

That third picture is where mine has rusted through. Damn winter popped it out. Anyways i'm curious are you what you plan on doing to that spot in particular to correct the problem. Considering it prolly wraps around the pinch weld also. Keep us informed on this little project with lotsa pictures!!

My rust is worse than what he's got. I've been working on welding in new metal for several weeks now. I'm near finished and will be posting numerous pictures when I am done. I've pretty much rebuilt the storage bin area of the car. It's not very pretty but it is probably stronger than when it came from the factory. I reinforced the rear wheel wells with 3/16 steel after I filled the holes with 16 GA. I'm going to be rubber coating the entire inside and underneath of the car when I am done also. I don't want her rusting out anytime soon. This car will also never see the winter roads again. It is my baby.

Right angle grider, the right size sheet metal, and welding. Also exspensive primer to seal it up after its grinded down. Then use various bondos to smooth them out. Theres more then 1 type of bondo BTW. For a good job, you always need some kind.

That's exactly how I"m doing mine. Cut out all that nasty old metal with my $20 ebay angle grinder. Got some sheet metal from my local fab shop. Used some cardboard to make templates of the holes. Traced the cardboard onto a piece of sheet metal and then cut it out with the grinder. Then used my trusty Lincoln Electric FCAW to weld in the new pieces. After that you can smooth 'em out and coat it with whatever protectant you prefer. Nothing feels better than welding in that new metal to fill up those gaping holes. You can literally see the car coming back to life before your eyes. Good luck. Sounds like you are already on top of things.

It took me over 2 months (working nearly every day) to fix all the rust on my 83 GS, it was worse in the wheel wells, but not as bad on the exterior panels. All it takes it a grinder, a welder and some metal and patience. Por15 is great for sealing it all up when you done.

Heck come on down to Texas. Most of the junkers in yards are in better shape than that--no offense--but no salt and a great climate means the cars don't really rust that much at all.

It seems like it would be a lot easier and cheaper to just buy a new chassis, I agree. Unless your time is worthless

After all the negativity I thought I'd lighten the mood with a story of one RX that's lasted. My uncle bought an '81 GSL brand new and never drove it in or even near winter. There's not a spot of rust or fading on it.

Sadly he hit something 4 years back but had every damaged body panel replaced with Mazda originals and the paint job cost 6K so it's absolutely flawless. It's black and it looks incredible.

Uunfortunely it has so little power that it doesn't really get driven - but it's still in immaculate shape so at least there's one out there that still is.
