It's on a 1984 GSL-SE I bought yesterday.

It was put on our cars as the 1st gen dominated IMSA GTU racing in the early 80's.

The reason I asked is that the guy who sold me the car said something about it being rare. Is it?

He didn't make that clear either. FWIW, mine is a white on burgundy GSL-SE with cloth and manual steering.

Mazda celebrated it's incredible success in the IMSA sports car racing series by putting those badges in their cars. They put them in a LOT of cars, so the sticker is not indicitive of anything rare or special in particular.

Actually, as the later years were released, the sticker was updated with the years that Mazda RX-7's won the IMSA Championships.

My 84SE has the years 80-84 listed in various places on the sticker, and I think it's a pretty cool attribute of the cars success on the racetrack. One of the things that made early RX-7's famous was that they were all over the races and usually finishing 1/2/3 or better. All of the other manufacturers were scurrying to keep up with the rotary sensation, and more than one of the factory drivers gave up and switched to rotary powered cars during this era. Mazdatrix owner is one of them.

I wouldn't be scraping that off of there for any reason unless you really don't like the decal. When I had my tinting done, I specifically stated that I didn't want the rear quarters tinted (they're covered by my Mariah hatch anyway). On the left side is the IMSA sticker, and on the righ rear quarter is the Rotary Rocket sticker from the dealership.

The stickers were a common marketing tool.

Fortunately for Mazda the competition in the GTU class was fairly limited as most manufacturers entered the GTO class [over 2.5 litres]. However, it was great publicity.

I love the decal, and am keeping it. Thanks for letting me know what it was about. Where can I find pics of the IMSA RX7's from back in the day?

Most Rx-7 books contain details of the GTU Class cars, for example 'Maxda RX-7' by John Matras which is in the series 'Sports Car Color History' published by Motorbooks International.
