what Diff. for a Turbo SE???

Okay so I have an SE and it's stock.
I was thinking about turbocharging it because I'm bored.
But what kind of rear end would I use??
I am on a budget.
If I turbo it I will be aiming for about 260HP. at the flywheel.
Not any serious power, just peppy for daily driving.
So what kind of Rear end is gonna hold up??
Is the SE rear diff enough??
Any info or links to write ups that I missed would be great.
I tried searching but the only things I came across were cars with serious mods like DirectFreaks car.
I need to know what I can do on a budget.
Oh and yes I would be swapping to a TurboII tranny.
Thanx

I've had plenty of luck with beating down my SE's diff at the autocross, it wasn't turbocharged at the time. However, my SE just underwent a turbo add on and I'm hoping for about the same numbers as you. So when I start beating up the diff again I can give you a better answer. However I've heard that they can take alot.

diff

Talk to FBII, he's turbo and his stock diff. seems to be taking it just fine. From what Ive been told the FB rear end should be good up to 300hp.

I am running the stock lsd with 3.9 gears with around 350 hp at the flywheel. holding up so far and sometimes I put autox slicks on it for some better hookup. I however did explode one "4.10's" last fall.

WOW guess what???
My bone stock GSL-se with 148,000 miles on it just broke it's rear end.
I thought the driveshaft broke but when I lifted the car today the driveshaft was fine. So my next guess was a broken axle bearing since one side was making some noise.
I drained the rear end oil and some teeth fell out.
I removed the driveshaft then I went to spin the front of the diff by hand and couldn't just like it's supposed to.
Then I spun the wheel and it turned then spun freely.
Very bad feeling when that happened.....Then I spun the front of the diff. by hand again and it spun freely.
I pulled out the diff and the Pinion gear is missing teeth and the ring gear is damaged!!!
WTF??
The car was owned by an old man that never took it over like 3k RPM...
I haven't raced on it either...
I'll post pix of the damage later.
Well I guess it's time to put in these 4.37 gears now.....

Actually if you can get a GSL 3rd member it has a better LSD in it.
Its considerably stiffer.

agreed

if your going turbo in the future, you want less gear not more gear... get the gsl-se lsd or a 84-85 gsl lsd will work too

Well I'm not trying to build a Drag car so I'm not concerned with top speed or anything.
I go up to the mountains and race to hell. I've lost a couple of cars of the edge of the hill side this year already.
Thankfully I'm still here and alive.
Anyway I thought about using higher gears only for blasting out of the sharp corners up there. As it is with a stock SE most of the places I go are 2nd gear all the way through. Theres not enough room for 3rd and 1st is to low and 2nd is jut to slow.
So it was a thought.
So you really think a GSL rear diff would do better because of the longer ratio???
The Diff looks to be in good condition still.
Just the Pinion gear broke. I have a 3.9 gear set sitting inthe garage.
I might just use that for now to get it running again.

My 125K old SE rearend has held up to 300 crank HP for almost 4 years with little problems. The old pumpkin I had in the beginning started to whine a little, but that was just a bearing,no carrier, axle or gear problems....and I drive it hard.Mind you,I dont clutch drop it or abuse the car,but she sees lots of full throttle time.My current SE pumpkin has been in since late 01 with no probs.I run Redline 75-90W and change it regulary, about every 12-15 months.
Id bet thats what happened to your rearend. The previous owner probably put 148,000 miles on the original rearend oil.He may not have beat on it,but the SE puts out its max torque down low, below 3000RPMs so his puttering around town was still applying the SE engine's maximum torque to the rearend.Torque breaks drivetrain parts, and old gear oil makes it happen sooner....

You are probably right...
I have never seen oil so black ever come out of a tranny or differential.
It was like over used motor oil.
Just black.
