aussiemg- The low volume/private import Australian scheme was used primarily for high performance jdm models not exported by the factory. It would be rare to buy a RX-7 that way other than a turbo engined model, one importer listed a GT two years ago for Aus $12,000. In this thread it was said the specific car came from the USA so my thought was for a US serviceman's purchase of a rhd; there is the occasional mention on this forum of one being for sale due to problems in some states of registering a rhd.
NZ still has a similar import scheme, the long white cloud hides a major collection of every type of second hand imported jdm make and model.

I'm in the US, and that's how I got my 78 Savannah GT. My friends uncle was in the service and stationed in japan. Bought it new and brought it back. Never even drove it in the US. Parked it in his garage, got married, had kids...then needed the garage space almost 30 years later...So I bought it for dirt cheap, flushed the fluids, new battery...sucker started right up! Had to gut the interior though...stupid mice, they freaken smell. Anyways, sorry about going off on a tangent...i'll stop now.

Colin Mc- that was no hijack but news of a great purchase.
Interestingly the factory in its publicity used the name 'Savanna' rather than the correct spelling of the geographical 'savannah'.
All Gen 1 jdm RX-7s had backseats but only the Japanese could fit in them. This is why many export models reverted to a two seat configuration. Have you tried to sit in the back of yours? There should be a special chapter in the Karma Sutra on their safe use.
If Shepski saw a 79 model jdm GT it would have the 2+2 configuration unlike the Aussie imported SA version.

^^ Lol, those little bastards!! I had a friend who had a '79 with the aftermarket "Pacific" Backseat, you guys remember the "Pacific Turbo" right? You had to be a 5 year old gymnast to get in those seats! Although we did get six people in that car... (one in the hatch ) 2+2 my ***! more like 2+.01.... Did anyone else have trouble with sitting in those? they were so close to the roof I had to hunch over and my head was still on the roof... Sorry to thread jack lol! but just remembering some good times.

Actually I think the bottom of the 2+2 seats were actually slightly taller than the bins, about level with the floor in the hatch. so you had to be four foot tall to be comfortable and four foot was pushing it!

Lol, yeah...i crawled into the back of mine and sat in those seats to remove the rear bolts that held the front seats in...not so much fun for a 6'2" guy...but the leather was in great shape in the back seat...doubt anyone EVER sat back there...Sorry about the savanna typo thing, I WAS thinking about the location, never actually noticed the badge is spelled different lol.
