Well here I go again!!!!

I just got home from a round trip to New Orleans to pick up the new project. I bought it from a member here on the board who seems to have got in over his head. This SE is mint inside, and not a spec of rust on the body. It will clean up nice with a new coat of paint and new drivetrain, which is missing. This makes RX #5 for me. I had a 85 in high school and now they are 20 YEARS OLD!!!! Where the hell have the years gone, I remember these things new on the dealership floor.

It would have been cool to see them all in the dealer windows!
Too bad its still not there, but then they wouldn't be as rare
as they are now . So theres a good and a bad!

They must have been so cool when they first came out. My mom said when she bought mine, she had to be put on a waiting list and you got whatever car they had when your name was up. Before she had my 7, she had an Rx-3. I wish she would have held on to that 3 too.

Well the saga continues:

Just got home from Miami picking up my jspec S4 TII.

It look pretty clean, but I stopped at a self carwash to blast off what little grime there was.

I am going to start to tackle the wiring harness this weekend, thank God for the search button and all of my rx brothers & sisters.

wish me luck

Update:

Well I finished stripping down the motor down to the block today. I forgot how much crap is on this motor. From the vacume lines to the huge harness and that powersteering pump thing, talk about overkill. One thing I noticed was alot of bolts and nuts were hand tight????? kind of scarry. Also this jspec even came with the airbox and hose, so I out of curiosty opened it to see the airfilter and it had a green sponge kind of like you see on a lawn mower. It was designed to fit with a rubber seal so it was not a poor mans repair. Has anyone see this before. I assuse it is washable. I do not plan to use the stock airbox system.

Monday morning I am dropping it off to Scott @ Mazsport in Tampa to build the motor.

I'll post some pics tonight.

It was cool. I wanted an SE sooo bad but couldn't afford it. Eventually I bought a new 85 S and loved it...then rekindled the FB love almost 20 years later!

I have done alot of builds over my time and one thing that IS A MUST is KEEP THING NEAT AND ORGANIZED.

If you have never torn down a motor or any project get yourself some ziplock bag, a good marker (sharpie) and some boxes. Label all wires and harness with some tape and you will reassembly will go much easier.

and take pictures for reference.

I spent alot of time to cleaning the engine bay out. This is a good time to check wires and do some electrical repairs.

I finished cleaning and repainting the engine mount and crossmember. The previous owner let a leaking oilcooler go for too long and there was alot of oil grime to clean. Nothing simplegreeen, wirlebrush, and some paint can't fix.

By the way I rebuilding me SE in a one car garage at my condo where I am not supposed to work on cars. Oh how little they know...

Take pictures[U] as you disassemble things. I thought I was covered with labelling every thing with white tape, the tape turned black and the labels were useless!!

Where did you find a jpec rx-7 engine and trans!?? I looked everywhere, and ended up with an atkins rebuilt.

I saw it on ebay from a importer (turboman2343) he had good feedback and seems to only deal in jspec engines. He had good feedback from people who bought and ran their motors. They gave me a 30 warr for the motor to run, but since I and doing a rebuild all I wanted was a good low mile starting point. We made a deal off ebay so I was able to get his price down, and I picked it up in person.

Thanks, I plan to keep everyone up to speed for this build. Since I am older now and much more established financially it will be a cool built. I will not cut any corners and do everything right.

UPDATE:

Dropped of the motor today and discussed what I wanted to build with Mazsport. They are going to build my S4turbo to 300hp at the flywheel. Looks like it is going to be several week until they can get started which is fine since I need to start working on the FMIC where I am going to mount and plumb it, but first I need to get one....Time to go back to the old-search button for more homework.

Here is just a basic list of what I still need to buy and install.

Centerforce Clutch
New radiator
Elec fan
Intercooler
Custom driveshaft
New fuel pump
Fuel press reg
Exhaust

$2700 aprox in parts still needed

$3000 aprox for motor build

$2050 spent so far for the car and jspec drive line

$7750 Budget just to get it running this summer, and this is all before it goes to paint.

Someone tell me again why I am doing this??????

Weekend Progress Report:

I did not do alot but got some small items done this weekend:

Installed new hatch shocks

Installed Momo steering wheel

Repainted shifter boot

Installed MBQuart radio and gauge panel (bought panel from akiratdk)

I am waiting for a dash panel trim piece, since mine is cracked. I made a deal and paid a member of this board for one but I have not received it yet and I am starting to question if or when he sent it.

UPDATE

Well its has been awhile since I did a update

Picked up some more parts today,

Fuel pump
Pres reg
Greedy BOV
New radiator
Jacobs FC1000 ingnition module
Borla 16in muffler for midpipe

I had to rent a work shop to finish the car, my condo association got pissed when they figured out I was rebuilding my 7 in the garage. I guess someone did not like hearing my air compressor at midnight.

I got the word on my engine that I should have it back in two weeks. I can't wait to get it in the car, I can start to see the end of this project and get it on the road.
