Question Water Pump Question(s)!!

okay my water pump just decided to break on me leaving my 7 lost and alone in my driveway. I am looking around for the best prices and quality of water pumps but I cannot seem to find a reliable company who sells them for a decent price. I am checking out my local mazda parts dept, carquest, autozone, foreign parts supply, and napa.

also is it better to buy a rebuilt, or new for price and reliablity? what is the average price for a new and rebuilt water pump? thanks.

I have a spare factory replacement sitting in a box, but I can't remember what I paid for it. I want to say something in the neighborhood of $40, but don't quote me on it...

Rebuilt units about $35 and new units run close to $65-75.

Go rebuilt, I drppped a AutoZone pump in my old Pro7 car at the track, and ran 2 more seasons on it without any problems.

Make sure it comes with the gasket, and might as well drop in a new factory thermostat, and add upper/lower hoses.

I put a rebuilt CarQuest water pump on my '82 GSL about 10 years ago. I replaced the original pump at about 120K miles. I'm at 195K now. I put a little gasket sealant just for water pump gaskets, I think it was blue RTV. It helped hold the gasket on the back of the water pump while I was installing it. No leaks.

I've since seen a suggestion to buy a couple of threaded rods (aka studs), threaded like your water pump bolts. Take two bolts out, put the studs in their place. Now the take all the rest of the bolts off. Slide the pump off the studs. Remove the studs to clean any gasket material off. Put the studs back on, slide the new water pump and gasket on. Put the bolts in, remove the two studs, and put the last two bolts in. I have not needed to try that, but it sounds good.

k guys thanks for all your help. i decided that i would be buying a new one factory from mazda through my local parts dept. just so i don't have to keep replacing it. and a lifetime warranty is on it too. its maybe 45 bucks but ill have to wait til the weekend to install it. oh well at least its an easy fix.
