Exclamation warning lights and voltage woe

Have 84 rx with powder probs

after warm up when on idle or low revs, all the red warning lights flash on together randomly and the voltage drops from 13/14 down to 12/11 and then stays down... but at times jumps back up and everything is fine!!! (Engine does not falter)

Has anyone had this?

Do I have a stuffed alternator/ reg. or relay or loose wire??? Help how should I go about testing it?
Alternator would be easiest to replace i guess, but most expensive!

First check the tension on your alt. belt. I could be slipping. If the alt. stops turning the warning lights come on. So, if the belt is slipping this could cause the lights to come on occationally. If the belt is good and tight, remove the alt. and take it to Autozone or Advance Auto if you have one of those stores close by. They will test the alt. for free and let you know if it is working correctly or not. If it is working correctly, then you may have some type of fuse problem somewhere.

Good Luck.

alt tension fine, began to take the alt out unhooked all the wires and decided to see if the lights come on if I start the car... but car ran fine (slowly draining batt of course) So could the alt be causing all the warning lights to flash?

put on an extra earth strap, old one looked a bit worn, terminals looked ok. went for a drive still the problem.

evil_m did you have all the display lights flash? I want it to be something easy!

I may be trippin but I think I heard a ticking noise like a relay flicking on/off as the lights flashed (when voltage had dropped) is there a relay behind the dash somewhere? have been studying the wiring diagrams CAN NOT find what could possibly be the cause.... and I'm too tight to go to an auto sparky yet!

Best thing to do at this point (in my opinion) would be to remove the alternator and have it tested. This is the most likely cause for your dilemma.

no not all the light come on.. just the GEN and ADD COOLANT lights.. then they go off.. i would take your alternator to a ADVANCED AUTO PARTS they will bench test it for free.. if its not that then i would definately take your battery cables off and clean then very very well.....
