It wants to start so bad.

Ok, So I got a brand new battery, and i got an alternator from the wreckers. (Picked up an E-fan and some fusible links too ).

Got the battery charged, put them both in, went to start, and it just cranks, It sounds so much like its going to start, but it wont. A few times it will, but it dies right away.

Whats wrong with my -SE now?

If it's that close to starting just push start it. Or pull start it if you have the means.

Remove the air cleaner lid and operate the accelerator pedal to see if the accelerator pump shoots raw gas into the throat. If not you've got a fuel feed problem. Remove a spark plug and make sure you get some nice whooshes when the engine is turned over (by hand, even). Check the J109 ignitors to make sure they're working (instructions for the test circuit are on the forum and in the manual).

that would take a while, when you pull the plugs to check them, plug one back upto the leads, and hold the end of the sparkplug against some where on the chassis then crank it, you will see it aprking if it's all good and that quickly elimitates that issue.

Yeah, i tried again like an hour later, it started for a bit, then died again.

Im pretty lost as to whats the issue. Its got new spark plugs, wires are on the right plugs as well. Havent checked the timing, but i dont have a timing light to check it.

And i definatly dont want to push start it right now, because its raining like crazy, and has been all day.

Oh oh, forgot it's an SE, with which I have limited debug experience. Anyone know how to static time an SE?

But if it starts and dies, my guess is fuel starvation.

My SE was doing the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago.......
First of all learn this if nothing else.....Starting fluid from the autoparts store is a rotary engines best friend. If a motor will ever run at all it will start with the aid of a little starting fluid sprayed inthe intake. I am speaking on that from 6 years experience with it and rotaries.
2nd thing. When my car was doing that, it turned out to be the TPS sensor.
My car kept flooding out after I would deflood it and start it up. It would run sometimes and then when I would tap the accelerator it would die. I figured out that when the car would turn on it was because the TPS was bottomed out all the way like it should be.
Then as soon as I would tap the pedal it would hit a deadspot on the TPS and it would flood since it didn't know where the Throttle was at.
So anyway I swapped out the TPS and deflooded it. It started right up and haven't had a problem since.
That's my 2 cents..........If you need a TPS let me know since I have a few spares on hand.
Peace............

This would not affect your car by making it flood. The SE usually only floods if there is a bad FPR on it. Thats from my experience with them. Or also if the return line is clogged.

Wait a minute...I forgot to ask if you went throught the deflooding procedure.
did you??
Pull out the fusible link under the hood on the strut tower. It's on one of the brown boxes by the battery. It's th link that simply says "injector".
Unplug it.
Pull out the spark plugs.
Crankt eh engine to spit all the crap and raw fuel out.
Crank it for about 10 seconds 3 times. giving the starter about a minute break in between.
Then you can pump a little bit of oil, about 1 ounce, into the rotor housings fromthe spark plug holes. I don't usually put oil myself, I just crank it and put new plugs in and spray some starter fluid and it fires up.

As soon as it starts have you tried to rev it up?????????
If it was flooded then you need to rev it up to get all the seals to make compression. As soon as it fires open the throttle about 1/4 to let it spin up.

Good luck......it always has worked for me...

The ONLY hard starting debug i have with my SE is this: it wouldn't start in the morning except if I cranked it over for about a minute(!) and then it would stumble into action. No problem when warm. So I figured it was leaky injectors causing flooding, but before I could fix that I applied the Famous Temporary Internal water Seal Fix (because I knew the guy I bought the SE from cheap was hiding the fact it had been leaking water and there was some horrid black stuff in the radiator when I got it cheap) and the problem disappeared. So I concluded that overnight water leaked into the combustion chamber and caused starting failure until it was all churned out.

That's all I know about the SE.

Ironically I Have An 85 Gsl-se Also. And Im Also Having The Same Problem. Im Pretty Sure Its Fuel Related Cause I Had Sprayed Starter Fluid In And It Started Momentarily. So It Will Start On First Try Then Die And Then Give Me A Flooded Sound. I Wait A Couple Hours And Same Thing All Over Again
