Vibration question.

Ok, this one is wide out there, while driving yesterday, a Vibration slowly developed, slight at first, and progressivly got worse! I have Just had a fresh 13B engine installed with a 12AT turbo 5 speed behind it, with new clutch and bearings, so i dont suspect this is the problem. I suspected wheel bearings, but all hubs are at normal temperature, so far i am guessing its a diff bearing, or tailshaft Uni Joint on the way out. if i lost a balance weight, it would have been a sudden vibration, not a progressivly worseing one.
The vibration is there in all gears and speeds, the faster the speed, the faster the vibration, even in Neutral. it does not appear to be a gearbox or engine problem.

What are your techniques for testing for such things?

I jacked up the rear tires, ran car in 3rd gear, and noticed my driveshaft was out of balance,,,but I had removed the shaft earlier and it wasnt out of balance then,,,sooo I just removed the shaft and turned it 180 degrees, re-installed, and checked again and no wobble...it still could be something else in your case,,but,,,good luck

Check your Tranny mount ??

I have a similar problem. However mine came from after a rebuild. Never had the problem before. We rebuilt my 12a (from my 83 gsl automatic) and threw it back in. When we took it out originally we didnt mark the tourque converter and the ring gear (for re-assembly) because i assumed that the tourque converter and ring gear were balanced independantly and the tourque converters position was irrelevant to the postion of the ring gear or the rear counterweight. But after bolting up the T.C. to the ring gear and starting it we have a bad vibration. Can anyone shed light on this? Is the tourque converter on an automatic balanced with the ring gear or the rear counter weight in some fashion? Or is my problem the tranny mount? We did remove the tranny and did discover the mount was broken.

Also Ultrlights.. as a side note. I had the front counterweight come off the key way one time and the thing shook like a giant pager on vibrate. It was a VIOLENT shaking. How bad is the vibration???

The vibration became pretty voilent, rattling everyhting in the car! but the problem turned out to be a binding rear Uni joint! changed that, and now she is as smooth as my wifes u know what.

Thats great, glad it was an easy fix for you. My problem still exsists. Still wondering if anyone knows anything about the balancing of the auto trans tourque converter. Any other automatic owners out there? For that matter anyone had a tranny mount break on them?

Cheers,

Simon
