Vented hoods!
Here are a couple pics of the new vented hood I am working on. The vent drops 2" down.....is this too much, will this interfear with anyones intakes or strut braces? How is the location of the vent? The vent is 12" deep.
Also, how do the vents in the valance look? You can see where I colored them in, this is where I am thinking of putting them??
The carbon units I am working on are 1 layer of carbon and 1 layer of glass. The hoods are very sturdy. There is no problem with deflection at high speeds. RX7.com has one on one of their "all motor" cars, its is a yellow 1st gen. This car is running in the 115mph range in the quarter with no problems with the hood. I am trying to make a few so if someone orders one I will have it in stock!! If someone requests, I can make theirs either extra thin or extra thick.

The only thing i have to say, is maybe a little higher up on the valance vents, if its possible. I havent looked at the valance to know if you could or if it would be any better, I ust think they would look more "centered"...or something. As far as the hood, it looks good. Not my cup of tea, but definatly nice looking. I just want either a CF stock hood, or a CF vented hood
. Also, are you saying that the CF hoods will be part CF and part fiberglass? No big deal, I was just wondering
.

Edit: On second thought, I think the bottom of the vents would look good lined up with the bottom of the headlight buckets...If they arent already...I need to re-check the pic...

Can someone measure to see how much clearance with the efi and post it on this thread??? I can make the openning smaller...it is not set yet....I could go to 1-1/2" or so??? Also, I will be molding a lip around the opening.
yes, one layer of carbon and one layer of glass. This is what most carbon parts are made of. You would not use carbon for all of the layers unless you are going to put a honeycomb core or foam core in the middle. As Manntis said, it is a waste of money to use all carbon!!
The vents in the valence are lined up with the headlights. If you go any higher, you run into a brace in behind.

For my scenario, the Cosmo intake is rather large, and probably won't fit with that particular size, style, or location of vent. I think Mike-P was saying his was extremely tight. But that's .0001% of the FB population.

You'll want the vent much farther forward to clear the dynamic effect chamber in the EGI 13B. The goal of the vent is to evacuate air warmed by the radiator before it flows over the engine anyhow.
I've actually been giving this some thought; ideally if people angled the rad as in a 2nd gen you could have the vent far forward and deeper as on the FD vented hoods. Of course, making this mod necessary to install a particular vented hood would shrink the market considerably...

Would someone with an SE measure the distance between the top of the intake to the bottom of the hood? Since my hoods dont have the factory bracing under them(which is about 1-1/2"-2") my vent is about as low as the factory hood!!
Manntis,
I am trying to create a venturi effect??? I would like to do two things...1st do what you said and pull the hot air from the rad. 2nd suck all hot air out of the engine bay. I figure what I have now is just that much more than stock???? What do you think??
Plus, my rad. is going to be mounted like you said and I am also reflecting the air up into the hood and at that point the vent will take over???

the vent has definatly got to move forward. I dont think that will fit any stock intake; series 2 or 3
I wont be able to order a hood of the vent is that far back. Buy the time I ordered a hood, my car will have a atkins 7in with a custom 6inch intercooler underneath it. So the top of the supercharger will stick out the hood.
So hear is my question, if the vent is far enough forward for my supercharger, can you cut the hood?
It looks great though, and the marks on the center valance look great too.

After thinking about it, I'm certain that thevent will need to be moved forward towards the radiator. Otherwise it will hit the GSL-SE intake.
As I said, I will work on measuring it out tonight, and will try to make certain that it clears front upper strut tower bars also.

Anyone interested in this hood, I need your dimensions also to be sure it will clear. I am only going to make one of these...it cost too much money to make one or two hoods. Although for the right price, I will make a mold and hood for anyone. You would be looking in the $700-$1000 range to make your own custom hood and the more you can buy the cheaper they will get.

Not to base on your hood deal, but in the picture at the
top that looks like a steel hood,,because of the brace.
on the under side of the hood, it can be seen through
the cut for the vent. anyway,, the vent should be moved forward some. right over where the fan shroud is..
on the valance how about 1 inch tall "slits" X the same size wide . again,,, thats just my input , or heads-up.
have you thought about vents right over the shock towers ?? just an idea.. keep up the good R & D man...

Look at the first pic.......on the other side of the car you can see the backside of another fiberglass hood...see the bracing...I moved it up.
