vacume advance (what exactly does it do?)

I have had all my rats nest removed for a few weeks including the vacume advance. Idle was a lot smoother and I could actually get it to idle nicely at a lower rpm. (before I could only get it to idle smoothly over 1000 rpm)

Anyways, when I was talking to someone that sometimes fixes my car (or tells me how to fix it) he said that what I did with the vacume advance was wrong, and that I should hook it back up.

So I hooked the two solinoids back up, however, now it does not idle as smoothly, and I cannot take the choke off right away.

Will I save gas with vacume advance hooked up or not?
Will I get more power with vacume advance?
I know people here recommend disconnecting it but why? (only because it will idle better?)

Also I had a problem with the carb stumbling at higher rpms and stalling in the rain. I was told that it would probably be my wires. I changed all my wires, cap and rotor but the problem is still present.

Could water be getting into the hoses that are for vacume advance and causing this problem?

Thanks

Vacuum advance doesn't seem to matter on our cars.

It's mainly just a way to advance timing under low-load conditions.
