UGH! Question about my choke!

Hey,

1984 GS. 145k.

I'm having an issue with my car. Basically, the battery juice dies, but only when I don't use the choke perfectly. If I screw up using it (which I'm prone to-- I'm still figuring out how to use it), the battery dies and I have to compression start it (good thing I live on a hill). When my friend Will drives it (he's more familiar), he holds the choke out all the way, keeps holding on to it, starts the car, and then it works. It's weird.

What the heck is going on? Do I need a new battery? How can the choke do that?

The choke should have very little to do with the electical system (other than the magnet.) I would have the Alternator tested as well as the regulator if it's a seperate unit.

The choke should be pulled all the way out and it should stay there all by itself until it reached operating temp, then it should automatically release and go back in on its own. Unless you have removed the stock choke system...

No, everything is stock. Sometimes the choke doesn't go out, and you've gotta pull it a couple times until it does go out.

So alternator and regulator... aight.
