U-Joints....replaceable?

so i need to replace my u-joints, preferably without having to replace the whole driveline....some guy told me that rx7s dont have replaceble U-Joints....is he right?
if not, anyone have some i can buy off them, no one stocks them....
thanks for the time!

What year?

That is technically correct for 84-85?? The ones that are pinned can't be easily replaced.

However, there is a shop over here that quoted my $160 to rebuild my driveline and replace the u-joints with replacable ones....I'm going to keep driving mine until the clunking gets louder...right now its not too bad, I only notice it when coasting at slow speeds. I'm thinking I can get at least another month out of it.

No replaceable U-Joints for some of us . 83+ RX-7's do not have replaceable U-Joints. Check out Mazdatrix for an aftermarket one that has replaceable joints. Its cheaper than a new one that doesnt have replaceable joints again .

well its really funny you brought this topic up,

i just picked up a mazda b2000 and the rear u-joint was shot bad.
i went everywhere to find one that would even come close to fitting and no such luck,
i spent 3 hrs getting the old one out,it was a royal pain in the ***.

finally i called dts "drive train specialists" they quoted me "$300.00 to completely rebuild it,

then i looked some more.
finally i found this shop ran by just one guy and it was under drive train something in the phone book,
he quoted $75.00 per u-joint and they would be replaceable,

so i went down there with my drive shaft and he said come back tomorow ,
i explained i had no time and wanted cash and carry on the item,
the price was knocked down to just a mere $50.00 and after removing the old one and cleaning up where the new ones would fit in the job was a snap,

the only diference is that the snap rings go on the inside intead of the outside,

i mentioned to him bringing down my rx7 driveshaft and he said he could do it for the same price,
so when i go back down i will get the exact model number of the u-joint from him "since there supposed to be replacable" and i will post it here.

im sure they wouldnt cost anymore then $25.00

soemone said they could hold out for a month,
and thats about how long it will be,
or i can just give anyone the number if they dont mind the long distance call and they can inquire for themselves

Here's the History

Buckaroo....

Had two SE's.... Both needed front universal replaced. I had two different shops do the the work. Paid $200 apeice for replacement of front and rear universals, and the driveshafts balanced. Both came back with vibrations at certain speeds. Even sent one back it was so bad, it returned to me still with vibrations. Checked all over, many shops refused to do the work. Dealer wanted $400 for a new one.

Result: Either get a "Quality" used one from a yard, best of luck. Or do as I finally did. Get one from Mazdatrix for around $250, and it will come with replaceable joints...

Oh by the way, I had mine made into a 3 inch and that was a lot of fabrication, and they only charged me $200... I had a problem with the rear u joint once , but they fixed it. I think it was just a bad u joint, but at any rate I doubt you are putting down 300 hp
Thats why I think I had a problem.

Damn, I just saw 3 driveshafts all sitting in one 1st Gen. down at one of the local junkyards here. I didn't check them out to see if any were good, but I've had pretty good luck in that respect. So, my '80 has replaceable u-joints? Thanks. -WG

I have a set of u-joints that I was going to put in my 82 GSL. Factory Mazda parts. Brand new, never used. They will work in your car. Sold the car a few months ago.

Will sell for cheap.

PS It is not that difficult to replace them yourself. I have done it, and am no great mechanic.
