tutorial for pipe(tube) bending.
hi my name is ben and i figured id help you guys out, my job right now is a precision welder/ pipe bender. all my work is + or - .01 inches or .02.
yes i know ben the bender lol.
in this post ill explain how to bend perfect 90's and 45's.
some math you will need to know when laying out you bends. most benders radius is for the center line of the tube/pipe your bending. if its the out side radius minus half the tubes dim if its the in side radius add .
to figure out how much of the tube is takken up by the bend ie from the start of the bend to the end of bend is simple.
angle x radius x .01745.
so for a 90 bend with a 2.5 radius it would be
90x2.5x.01745 = 3.92625.
to figure out the center of the bend divide by 2.
to layout a 90 bend.
say from the start of the tube to the center line of the 90 bend you need 30 inches. just minus the radius from the dim mark the tube and bend. say you all ready have a 90 bend and you need another one after it. the center line to center line dim is 30. add half of the tube dim then minus the radius and that number will give you the point to mark on the tube if you comming from the out side of the tube.
any thing othere then 90's you really need to layout on paper and know some math to make them work.
if you have a print its easy as pie .
monday ill bring home my note book and post some pictures explaining how to layout tubeing with othere angles then 90's.

i bend stuff from .02 wall up to .25 the math should be the same . the wall thickness more or less just determines how much you have to over bend. like when you bend a 90 you mite bend it to 92 deg or 95 then it springs back. so you need some junk tube to learn on your benders and see how much you have to over bend for what angles. o yeah the 0 mark on benders (the point where the bend starts) isnt allways in the right spot so you mit put you mark a head or befor the 0 line on the bender.

yeah couldnt think of how to spell it lol. and i figure i wasnt sure if every one new what it is. ill draw up a main hoop and a few othere parts give dims then explain how to do it.

o yeah side note when you get into bigger size tube/pipe when you bend it the inside edge of the pipe on the bend will ripple. if you dont have a mandrel bender the easyist way to stop this is by filling the tube with sand and caping the ends.

any ways i decied to post this cause i new it would help people out. and i ask alot of stupid questions so i dont make stupid mistakes. so i figure i can give back .
i had to take my dog to get looked at, she sick and staying over night i spaced out and for got to draw some stuff out ect so when my head is in the right place probly wensday ill post some more info.

no cutting and welding. this is if you useing a pipe bender .
if you dont have a pipe bender. pack the pipe with sand. weld the ends up. find some thing round to bend around. measure it, divide that number by 2 to get the radius. then add half the pipes width to that number thats your bending radius. now heat and bend the pipe around it.

It was the process I was interested in in how will I bend the pipe.. I follow the math fine..but I dont have a pipe bender.
I can do a sand filled pipe and can find some curves to bend around and create a plane to work on with pegs on one side to secure one end of the pipe.
What and how do you recommend attaching a lever arm to the other end of the pipe to create enough force to bend it. How long should the lever arm be?
How hot should I heat the pipe and how hot should it be when I bend it. Or is it just heating it and then letting it cool to anneal it, then bend it that your driving at?
Sounds like the 1/8" wall 21/2" pipe is going to be very hard to do but the thin wall 2" pipe will be cake.
Under what conditions will I still kink the pipe?
Do you recommend a burnzomatic hand held torch with propane as sufficient or will I need something much bigger with compressed air mixture?
any more ideas on this?

depends on how big your guns are lol.
buy a pipe that will slide over it. just get like a 4ft length should be enough.

get it read hot heat the whole area which will be bent. have it barley glowing red/orange need two peeps one heating one bending.
1/8 wall shouldnt be to hard to bend frist try with out heat.
get a map gas (sp?) its a yellow bottle. it will take some time with that.
if you can get a hold of oxy/actel tanks use a rose bud tip will take like 10 secs.

good rule of thumb overall dim of the tube times 2 should be the smallist radius you should use. so 1/4 pip no smaller then .5
2 in pipe dont use a radius smaller then 4 inches.
