Thumbs up Transmition Question

hay all i got a 81 gsl-se automatic and was wondering did they come stock with 3 gears only?

also was wondering has anyone done like a swap to add another gear into the trans to make it a four speed automatic??

its kinda annoying being passed by on the freeway lol ...........

in other words i want to have a overdrive gear for better gas mileage on the freeway since i do a lot of freeway driving to and from work. and hate the whining of the motor doing 3,000 rpm just to do 55 mph.................

There wasn't a gsl-se in 81.

No, you can't swap in another gear. You have to swap in a 4 speed transmission. That one comes with the overdrive unit. It will requrie you to make a extention on your mount so that it will fit, the electronics and a different driveshaft.
