I'll be changing my clutch soon and someone said that when I replace the fluid that I should use 50% gear oil (80-90w) and 50% ATF. Is that true? Also what's the best brand to go with?

 

just use a good premium synthetic all on its own

No ATF in the transmission at all. Use strait 80w-90

 

NO need for ATF unless you have an auto tranny - Just use some nice synthetic gear oil. ANy name brand is good.

 

K so I picked up a full gallon of valvoline 80w90 today (figured I could do the diff while I'm at it). Is valvoline good enough? I was thinkin about goin with Lucas but it said for extreme applications and was quite a bit more expensive. Should I have gone with Lucas?

 

Valvoline is just fine. Did you get synthetic?

 

I believe it is. If not I'll exchange it. Would Lucas be better?

You don't need Lucas! :-)

It's very simple to change the differential fluid as well as the Transmission fluid. Just take the drain plugs out and let it drain for awhile then refill.

Make sure you get a pump that attaches to your container of fluid to dispense the fluid back into the diff and the transmission.

 

I bought one of those hand pumps it's a black ball between two clear hoses. You squees the ball an it pumps it in.

 

Is 80w90 ok for the diff?

It's all good that was my bad I'm just excited/nervous/anxious about my first clutch job/diff fluid change. Sorry doc and thanks much for the input.

 

I think I'm gonna finally do the oil pan gasket and maybe the hockey puck motor mounts too.

 

I've been using the 50/50 mix for years, in many different vehicles. Works great at keeping the synchros clean, or cleaning them up if already gummed.

I've also recommended this to many members with tranny issues. They usually report favorable results.

Lucas products are good stuff...

Yeah the stuff I got isn't synthetic so I think when I return it I'm gonna get Lucas.

 

Which type of ATF are we talking about ATF+4, Mercon V, Dexron VI.......or does it not matter?

 

I have had success with some brands that already mix their gear oil with ATF (Royal Purple comes to mind, but I believe Amsoil also has one)

When changing out the differential oil, if you have a LSD make sure you use the LSD additive.

 

This is why you run the ATF. It has better cleaning agents (detergents) in it than plain gear oil. I have a transmission that was sitting 7 years and the shift linkage is TIGHT that I have plain gear oil in Im going to drain out now that Ive put a couple hundred miles on it and refill with a strong mix of ATF to try and clean some gummed up crap out. Then I will drain that after a couple hundred miles depending on results and switch to a less ATF concentrated mix so I have lube for the bearings.

As for doing the drain and fill, make sure you get the fill plugs on both the transmission and differential out BEFORE you take out the drain plugs. Its a lot of fun when you get the drain plugs out, empty the case, then realize the fill plug is jammed in tight and wont come out, or strips out. Also, the fill plug out helps it drain a little better because the breathers are a little small, same concept as taking the oil cap off for an oil change.

i like the 50/50 too, works just as well as redline... 100% ATF even works, but i think its a little thin

 

There's an easy way to fix that issue. It's called the "face" method.

 

ATF As long as its not Type 2, has detergent in it its great for keeping things clean as Kentetsu said, i put about 4 ounces in my engine oil in all my vehicles and it keeps everything clean as long as i dont go over on the oil change that is.
