tranny bearing
It seems that it's time to replace my throwout bearing. Who's done this before and what is involved? What happens if i don't before it completely fails? What should i fix/replace while i'm there?

you have to drop the tranny to replace the throwout bearing... not too hard, just unbolt all the bolts from the engine to transmission bell housing, unbolt at remove driveshaft from rear axle, DRAIN TRANNY FLUID FIRST, remove the starter, take off a few wires, drop the tranny crossmember... pull out tranny, replace throwout bearing, reverse disassembly instructions. Get a haynes manual to do it, it'll tell you all you need to know.
If you drive it till it fails, it'll either wreck something like the throwout arm, or it could just make a really annoying squealing noise every time you press the clutch in.

While you are at it.. check the tranny front cover and replace it's seal.. only a couple bucks.... don't mess with the pilot bearing unless a needle bearing is missing. .. and if you don't remember the last time you replaced your clutch ( or if you think it's slipping).. might as well do that too while you are at it...drain and refill tranny and rear end with redline or equivalent. Is that too much yet?? I like killing a bunch of birds with 1 stone.
