To Track a Vacuum Problem...

Hey All,

Short and sweet this time. 3 pictures.

1. This is an orphaned hose behind the carb from right side to left. Can't figure out for the life of me where it's supposed to connect. Also, the one with the clamp... what's it supposed to connect to, my guess is AAB Valve #1. Can I safely block it like this?

2. These holes on the right side of the carb are mysterious to me. To plug or not to plug? Oh and that blocked-off T junction, would that go to AAB Valve #2?

http://uxprod.cegep-heritage.qc.ca/~jwalker/holes1.jpg

3. And finally, on the carburetor side of the rats nest, I can't figure out where these are supposed to connect, so I just capped them. Is this the cause of my problem? What do I connect the shutter valve to, if anything? And there's a funny-lookin' saucer-shaped thing with an electrical connector that mounts in the yellow spot.. wassat for?

Any help from the experts would be much appreciated in helping me get this carb hooked up properly. Andy took the #1 and 2 AAB Valves off I think, and something on the left side... I have those parts off my old carb and I want to remount them if necessary to track down this damn vacuum leak. I'll post more pics, or detailed pics of other areas if you guys need 'em.

Well I don't have carbs so I can't help you much here, but that sure is a lot of capped hardlines. Was something removed from the car?

Anyways...you can probably check the FSM vacuum hose routing diagram and solve some of these gremlins.

As best as I can recall.
1- Yes your correct, they are both to the AAB (which I see you have conveniently removed LOL). Yes you can block them.
2- the 3 small holes are nothing, they are there in case Mazda wanted to drill and tap them for screws. The big hole in the middle is for the richer solenoid. Only 5spd cars have this so it looks like you have an auto carb. The way to tell is to look in the hole, if its threaded, then you need to put it back in. If its not, then its blanked and unused. The capped off nipple I cant recall, although it may have gone to a soleniod that mounted to the secondary dia housing and used that orange connector.
3- I need to get off my *** and finish tracing FJ's diagram. Go ahead and flog me, I havent had the chance to finish studying it sorry. Anyway I digress. Your big honkin vacuum leak is from that big *** opening for the shutter valve. Cap that big opening. As far as the rest I cant recall. Funky, saucer shaped thingie is the vacuum switch. It has one vac hose and a green connector goes to it. It tells the "computer" that the engine is running for various functions.

Okay... the problem is that I *have* a 5-speed standard 84GS... And if this carb was off an automatic 82GS, would that be a huge problem? You're right, I think I remember some sort of electrical doodily connecting in there on my original one, I'll see if I can find it and try to screw it in there. How much of a problem is this?

Alrighty, I'll cap the shutter valve. Hopefully it'll work. I'll let you know what I come up with

Ok, like in my PM, I was wrong on the orange solenoid and nipple in pic 2. The soleniod on the sec diaphragm with the orange connector has the bottom nipple capped and the other 2 went to the top of the carb for the altitude compensator.

Also, if the carb isint threaded for the richer soleniod, dont sweat it. It only works between 3-4k rpm's.
