Torquing tension bolts

Rebuilding motor, got to torquing the tension bolts. I did a criss cross pattern 4 step process:

1. With socket wrench torque until bolt head just touches rear plate and resistance is felt
2. 10 ft lb
3. 20 ft lb
4. 27 ft lb

Afterwards I went back and checked the torque on all the bolts. Bolts #1-14 were all below 27 ft lbs. Bolts 1-4 were about 20 ft lbs. I was suprised at how far off they were, I have a good torque wrench. As I progressed thru the bolts, they were progressively got closer to the spec of 27 ft lbs. Bolts 15-18 were spot on at 27.

So I retorqued all of them to 27 ft lbs and checked it twice. Does this sound right? I did hear a few more of the 2 piece apex seals *clink* after retorquing everything.

works for me.

i havent had any trouble (that i know of) by torquing the engine like that.

the last few i actually have done the last couple steps twice, like the 20ftlbs step, i'll torque everything, and then retorque it, just because of what you noticed.

There is a specific prescribed sequence in the Factory Service Manual... why not try that?

Thanks guys. Shop manual says to do a 3 step process but doesn't say to go back and check the torque of all bolts after step 3. I thought it just makes sense to do so since the final torque setting is irrespective of the order they're wrenched on. I did do the shop manual prescribed order (1-18) of course.

Motor makes great compression too.
