I chickened at 125 on my speedometer. However ten over costs 105 bucks here in mi. Trust me.

cdrad51: I think the speedo is quite accurate myself. With 185/70/13 tires, you should be very accurate up to around 80 or so. But, if you are off even a little bit, by the time you are doing a 100 you are off even more from actual. Faster you go the less accurate I think it would be. I think I'm within 5mph of the truth anyway...
I topended with a stock carb at 142. But that was at a racetrack. No aero on the car, but a full road racing suspension.

EDIT: that car has 4:88 gears in it.

Nah, a decent paper filter will be fine. The K&N is a little more freeflowing, but not alot. Your idle mixture has nothing to do with this problem.

I remember reading somewhere in a spec sheet that the top speed of a 1st gen was 132 mph. I guess that would be near redline on 5th gear... let's see. What's the speed at 6500 on 4th? multiplied by 1/0.807.

So I guess if 4th tops out at about 106 you could do 132 on 5th, if you have enough powa.

rx7carl: thanks again for your info. Interesting speed you have there. So, mainly just the sterling and different gear ratio, huh? No porting, etc.?

I was reading the other thread on 79 models w/4 speeds. That thread makes it sound like I'm not the only one here. Going home today I tried it out one more time. Stayed in 4th longer. Got 100mph in 4th(wow!!!) But, when I shifted to 5th acceleration just stopped. I may have gotten to 105 in like another 1/4mi. or so after I shifted. 5th just plain sucks if you ask me.

I'll start a new thread about K&Ns....

Nope, stock engine, stock (not Sterling) carb, RB header, collector and dynomax cannister muffler.

4th gear is a 1:1 in a 5spd, 5th is o/drive. Dont know about 4 spds. Check Felix's site. He has all that info on there.

I've gotten mine up to 110 no problem bone stock. I'm curious about the aero problems people are feeling. Someone said it felt like it floated past 70... My GSL feels sticky at 110. Then again... I am used to a 84 200SX still. But even that I've ran at 115 no problem.

I hit 95 in my 12a a few days ago, with my 17" wheels, so it was a little over 100....I'd imagine.

At that speed the wind buffeting is too much to feel comfortable.

I've been to 142 in my 00 Accord sedan, and it feels like 65.

I think I cruised at 90mph in my 83 12a (no mods). I hit 100+ a couple of times without problems. This was back in 95 though.

Alrighty now.......I have good news! Turns out I was just WAY the ___ off on my timing! After using the light to set timing last night, my car idles at 750rpm just fine (1200 at min. b4) and 5th gear has plenty of power now. Didn't get a chance to really go for it this morning, but I shifted to 5th at 85mph(just to see if there was a diff.) and it picked up speed just fine this time. Got to 100mph and it was still picking up just fine before I had to let off. I'm thinking I could get 110-120 with enough road now. Don't see 142 happening though.....

about the stability at high speeds. Mine shakes (just a little) at 100 only b/c my tires suck and have flat spots in them. New set of tires and a GOOD alignment, these cars should be very stable at high speeds. Just no sudden movements of the wheel of course. Everyone knows Rx-7s are light in the rear.................

I regularly do 140 mph in my FB. Its fun.
I smoked a 79 camaro on the freeway yesterday (it was a v8). Let him have a head start and then i walked away from him hehehehe. Funny thing is, he was laughing his *** off at me when i pulled up next to him and blipped my throttle. I waved bye bye to him as i passed him hehehe.
I could do 155 easily, just that my stock fuel pump starts to run out of fuel at 140, and i dotn like detonation, so i let off

They are not light in the rear, they're very well balanced. They do have snap oversteer due to suspension geometry.

P.S. glad you found some more power!

thanks.

Well, by saying "light" I'd didn't really mean weight I guess. I've just always said that. I guess in NASCAR, you would say loose? Point is, the rear breaks loose pretty easy around curves. I know b/c I'm having to start all over again building a 1st gen since I lost my other back in h.s. due to me loosing it in a curve about 90mph or so. Yeah, I was stupid......

I go average of about 80 to 120 MPH here in Vegas out on the 215 and on I-95 depending on the traffic late at night after work is the best though... I was going so fast about 110 and out of the blue a NHP just pops in front of me...I feel my car can go more than 120...but it starts feeling unsafe to me so I dont push it...

Hey, Bryan - how do you feel your streetport works with your SE?

I've been thinking about going with an aggressive streetport for my 13b EFI 84SE, but many places won't even SP them due to the '6'-port intake system.

Who did yours?

What's holding you back is he air your passing thru! Even if you tighten the car up you'll probally only get 125 out of it.

Thanks for the comments. I have had this car up over 105 on several occasions, but want to stress that this is really dangerous.

Judging from a lot of the responses in this thread, it sounds like we all like to drive fast, all take consideration about where we do this, and generally conduct 'speed-testing' in as safe a manner as possible.

When you're driving that fast, however, you should be on a deserted stretch of road, preferably separated highway, and with NO turns, whatsoever. As long as you're being cautious about other drivers and any potential (unforseen) obstructions in the road - you'll probably be alright.

Something to think about with our older cars is that they're not in as good of shape as they once were. Anytime you take the car to that kind of extreme speed, you better have made some preparations beforehand like checking your lugnuts, your oil level; pretty much everything on the car.

Scares me to think that a forum member may be driving at the ragged edge and not even be looking at these things...
