Timing For Dummies

Is there any way to set timing based upon initial dizi position. For example, if I know where it was originally stock I then turn clockwise x amount of distance to achieve 24L. Same for the trailing using the dashpot for 16T. The initial stock position seems to be permanently etched into the brackets so I would assume it could be used as a point of reference (IE head of hold down bolt showing half of the original etched area where stock was set).

Not sure if it's just me but I havent wanted to pull and mark the pulley, but want to reap the adavntage of having the timming set close to optimal performance. I've been playing around with the settings but everytime I think I have it where it should be set... a little voice inside says it could be better... I change it... and the story goes on and on.

If I knew positionally I was in the ball park... I would let it rest. If someone has a pic of 24L 16T that would be even better (but I'm not pushing my luck).

Thanks in advance.

You can get close by noting the positions of the 2 marks already on the pulley and their distance from each other. Then you can reach in there with some white-out or chalk or something and make a good conservative guesstimate, erring on the side of caution of course.

I would not recommend going by the position of the dizzy or the marks on the bracket. You're not trying to do this without a timing light are you?

I do have a timing light... but yes I will fess up to trying to do it without... I guess what I'm hearing is that is not a good idea. I will mark the pulley and do it.

You don't need to mark the pulley if you have a digital advance timing light.

It's pretty easy to mark the pulley as it's 360mm's in circumference. So one degree = one mm.

If you want to set it to 24L/16T it needs to be done with the vacuum advance disconnected and the engine revved to about 3000rpm. This is to replicate total advance at WOT.
