Alex
I have the Borla XL installed along with a 3" racing beat presilencer
right after the downpipe. (Oh yeah, and my car is running. I had the
opportunity to hear the car with just the RB presilencer in place and no
Borla XL muffler in place. The piping to back of the car was there, but
the Borla XL muffler was not installed. The car was a pretty loud
without the Borla muffler, but not as loud as I thought. The RB muffler
did a good job of quieting the beast. In fact, the exhaust guy suggested
leaving the Borla rear muffler off. But I wanted the car as quit as
possible. So, after installing the Borla muffler the car quieted down
somewhat but not very much. It is still louder than I want. I do like
the sound of the setup though. It is not raspy or tinny. Idle is deep
and pretty quiet. Visually comparing the two units (Racing Beat and
Borla XL), I think the RB presilencer/muffler is a better unit, and the
exhaust guy agreed too. Both units are straight through and packed with
steel, so you don't have to worry about restriction.
An option that I may of went with instead of the Borla would be to go
with 2, 3-inch RB presilencers. One in the back and one right after the
DP. But overall, not a bad muffler for the price.

I was originally going to go with the RB 3" pre-silencer. When I called
they said it was out of stock and they had no immediate plan to get more
in. There exact words were that it "was a dinosaur" to them.

I have a hunch that they will magically "find" some if they get a dozen calls for them in the next 30 days.
This job is so full of custom fabs as it is, making a presilencer doesn't seem all that far out any more.

I think I'm going to just buy one 3" 90 deg bend and make it come straight out the hood Can you imagine the looks I'd get
But no seriously, all I have now to put on there is a 3"in-out muffler tht I know isn't going to quiet it down to what I want, still have to get a pre-muffler of some sort.

Any shop will charge you an arm and two legs to do this job, and it still won't be done to your specs.
A cheap shop (not one that I want doing my swap) will charge $50+ per hour. If they do things right, you will be paying a minimum of $2500 (off the top of my head estimate) + fabrication costs and parts. And that's if you want a completely stock TII setup. Of course the exhaust will have to be custom regardless, and you will have trouble finding a shop to touch that with all the emissions crap these days...
I'm not trying to talk you out of your swap, but I think you need to find more time to make the job financially justifiable (hey it's hard enough when you are doing all your own labor), and make the end product worth the money and time you will have invested.
This is not a hire someone to do it kind of project. After everything is in you car (from someone else's labor), you will not know anything more about your car than you did when the project began. I'd say do it yourself and take your time, or forget it altogether.

ok, i guess ill just take my time and do the swap with my friends. maybe you guys could help me out a little bit though. i know i have to have a custom tranny mount. what exactly should i tell the fab shop needs to be done with this custom tranny mount. right now i am still stockpiling parts. here is what i know i need:
(by the way this is being done to a base 79 rx7)
- i need a rear end, will the t2 rear end bolt on or do i need to get a different rear end.
so far all i have is the motor, a 91 t2.
tranny- im looking to get any second gen 13b tranny, 5 speed, but again i need help on what exactly needs to be custom about it, and does the custom mount have to be made after the motor is in.
-ecu- im was planning on using a t2 ecu and harness, but is there an alternative that is in the same price range, by that i mean a aftermarket one less than 400 that works well with the t2
-fuel pump and injectors-will the second gen's equipment be ok here. i am looking for a stock t2 setup for now, with only bolt ons and increased boost as my mods. i will upgrade the turbo, but probably not for more than a year.
- and do i need coils, because i dont even know what those are
feel free to answer some of my questions or add on to my list. thanks
-i have a 12a, so i will be using that front cover, but i heard that has to be customized in some way as well, what does that require
-i heard i have to move the turbo forward, is there any alternative to that, and if not, what are the methods of doing this
-need a downpipe, i heard second gen downpipes work if you shorten the exit side

Turbo charged Rotaries is like Calculus Level 5 by comparison.

Please, take some time, read through the forum, do Searches and ask questions. If you learn to crawl before taking the marathon, you will appreciate the efforts that much more in the future.
If you are determined, Read up on how Rotaries work, how Turbochargers work, and then when you realize that it is not cheap - You'll probably still want to do it anyway.
A Turbo First Gen is almost magical if you have ever had the pleasure of riding in one.
All the people that I know from this board who are tackling these projects (Jim, Mike, Cam, etc) were are all pretty damn knowledgable people when it came to rotaries. I have learned alot of details that would have cost me dearly if it wasn't for these guys. Just remember, turbo 1st Gens are not for the faint of heart or faint of wallet.
You may want to consider other power adders that may be much simpler and sufficient for you. . You can build good horepower on a rotary without ever going into the engine. These projects will also help build your confidence into doing larger projects as time goes on.
Good Luck and keep us posted. We are always trying to learn and help each other.

Mike, relax. Before you start dropping F-bombs try reading what he was saying... based on your post, I think anyone here would have the opinion that you hadn't read the multiple pages of posts, nor had you thought thru the entire project.
I wish I was 20 again... if so, I'd be bustin' my *** in scholl and chasing tail, not taking on this project! But, to each their own... the end result will be worth the work, I'm sure. And people like DirectFreak will be your best resource, so be nice to them.

Okay guys, take a pill before this thread packed with info is shut down for flaming.
I know I had a hard time not responding in a similar fashion to the way to Alex did. The first time, not the string of pictures telling gen1mike where to stuff it.
gen1mike (or anyone else who just spouts questions without reading what has already been typed out in thousands of words here): This isn't the sort of thing that one likes to repeat for everyone with a casual interest in the job. By casual I mean those who don't do their homework first instead of just blurting out their questions. People will more than likely help you more than you expect if you show a little initiative and help yourself first.
We like to help people, and want to see more turbo 1st gens around, but you have to realize that the reason this thread is a sticky, and the reason the forum has a search function is so that we don't have to answer these same questions every other day. Attacking one of us for getting a tad impatient because you don't like to do your own research isn't going to make friends fast around these parts of the rotary community...

Mike, one last item: If you got $5000, do a search on AutoTrader.com. There's a guy selling a 13B Turbo 1st Gen. Looks sweet. He was working in a rotary shop when he did all the work. To me it looks like a great deal.
It would save you a ton of work and time... probably cash too!

i dont know about "best" but if i had the cashola i would get a tilton double disc setup and flywheel. definitly handle the power and abuse you can dish out, and you just replace the metal friction discs. if you cant afford that i would say a chromoly flywheel and a ACT clutch,
#98
well i dont know i lucked out when i got my motor from corksport who just happened to have a mazdaspeed 12lb chromoly flywheel minus the counterweight. talk to some japanese rx7 guys, i have (tried to) read a few rx7 tuner magazines from japan and they have like 30 different flywheels and clutch combos its just finding a way to get it from point A. to point B.
