These cars stink!
Hey lets face it these cars without emissions on smell bad. Now before anybody gets offended with my out burst I love my car. Had it for 10 years now and put a ton of money in to it, but the exhaust smells. I feel like I am gasing everyone around me at stop lights. So I am thinking of trying one of these Random Technology Free Flowing Cat. Converters. They make a universal that is pretty small and I dont think it requires a air pump (still have to look in to that). Any body got any experience with these. I know that I will lose a little power but in this case I will deal with it.

the 7 smells like a rotary, lol, no other way to put it . friends complain when they're driving behind me of the smell and the burning of the eyes. if i've got a 7 running in a garage, even with the door open, it'll burn my eyes. i dont mind at all. i kind of like the smell. as for running an RT free flowing cat, never have but have heard ok things about them.

I am currently running a stock exhaust, no cats, aftermarket muffler. I havn't had a problem with exhaust smell. Just the normal of a rotary. Are you running rich? What are your AFR's?
If you do go with a cat I would make sure it's a quality stainless one. Rotaries cook exhausts and petrify cats.

Good at "stupid"
Get the fuel additive. When I go to the local shine and show, I put the banana/pineapple stuff in. Smells great! I also got Khumo Exasta Color Smoke tires, so when I do a burn out the smoke is bright red. Fun times!

I hear what you are saying about the heat of a rotary destroying the cat. I would think it would be even worse with the 13brew single turbo I am running. I will have to call Random Tech and ask them if they have something to stand up to the rotarys intense heat. It will be running leaner soon as I am getting a new tune after this break in is over. I dont think it will kill the smell enough for what I would like.

First off if you tearing up in the garage at idle. Warm up the car. Take your idle mixture screw and crank it all the clockwise slowly until the car starts to stumble/miss a bit . Then crank it counter clockwise 1/4 turn. This should help with the overly rich idle.
Next, I don't think you have to settle for "stinky" exhaust.
The main reason rotarys get such a bad rap is because people tear off all the rats nest and emissions equipment and expect the carb to some how know & adapt to the new setup. This isn't fuel injection people there are no o2 sensors that tell a computer to adjust fuel mixtures.
Most of the smell can be eliminated by adjusting the air bleeds and jet sizes in the carb. to bring the A/F ratio back to stoich.
I'm not going to pretend I know how to do this on a nikki. But I'm sure it's similar to a holley which I do know about.
You need a WB02 sensor first off. Then you need the means to lean out your cruise and idle mixtures. I.E. jets and air bleeds. Any good performance shop should be able to help you out. I'm sure the sterling carb guys could send you a bolt on carb that is in the ball park and would just need some fine tuning.
Doing this will not only help with the smell but it will make more power and get better gas mileage if done correctly.
Good luck...

for all those with stink problems, try some experiments
run 2gdfis or dlidfis ignition, try it on Leading first then borrow someone elses and add trailing too. it may introduce other issues but lets see what happends with results here
lean out carb incrementally abit but watch exhaust temps
how many of you are only getting 10 - 16 MPG and running wayyyyyy tooooo rich currently.
try adding some advance to the timming for both L and T but not too much on the T or you could kick the rotor in the wrong direction
the rotary was set up by the factory to burn inefficently so that downstream from the engine an "incinerator" of some kind would clean things up for gov. standands
just some quick thoughts
ps too late at nite to check my spelling
