Tell Me About The First Gen...
#26
Lets get back to the questions in the thread. What would be a good 12a powered daily driver, what will it cost and what points to look for?
Rico05 already has a nicely modified FB for his performance needs. It would burn-off most V8s. He wants advice on a 12a NA for daily use.
A well maintained 1986 GSL would be a good buy. Prices vary by location, check out what is available in the top third of the market. Say up to $1,500. This should give a reliable car without too much down time and greasy weekends. Its OK to spend time continuously with a project car, but that's not you want in a daily driver.
Yes you should check the usual rotary things as on a FC, there are numerous threads you can get info about on this. A main concern with a gen 1 is body rust. You can replace mechanical bits but the body is a different matter. Any engine over 150,000 miles will be heading for a rebuild.
The great thing with a 12a is you can mod it easily and at low cost. Exhaust/headers, carb, shocks, wheel/tyres.
This will give a better performance and still be a daily driver, smooth and reasonable fuel consumption. The Gen 1 has been around so long there is good evidence on what works. On one hand, buying a car with the mods is a cheap way to go, on the other hand it may indicate hard use. If you want to play around, then a low mileage 'stock' car would be the way to go.
Good luck

mines got headers and 180k miles still runin strng. and i beat it daily as it is my daily beater now. yeah the 4 wheel discs on the gsl are nice as is the lsd etc so try and find one. i prefer the 84-85 interior myself, thats another thing to look into. some people like the 83 and before interior. check out some pics and decide for yourself.
