The tach gets it's signal from the coil. How is yours wired up?

It could be your voltage rectifier. If its an early model, the car has a generator and rectifier instead of an alternator. If the rectifier doesn't work it could affect the tach function.
Does the voltmeter function of the tach when you first turn it on before you crank the engine?
