Tach on the hood

I was thinking that it would be cool to mount a tach on the hood, like the old firebird/trans-ams. I figure I would just need a good tach, a hole in the hood, a little careful work with fiberglass and bondo, primer, paint and blamo! tach molded in the hood. Maybe have a nice aerodynamic lump. What do you think? Anyone ever done this? Pics?

Planning on having a nice long wire run so you can still open the hood without having to disconnect it?

I can just run a wire down the hood between the sheet metal and stiffening braces (made up term) and down near the hinge and to the ignition.

Gotta make sure you get something waterproof!

I remember JC Whitney used to sell knockoffs of the firebird/GTO tach.

I want an accurate, fast responding tach. Will any old aftermarket performance tach do the job? I saw a nice autometer tach for $85. But then I saw a just as nice summit racing tach for half that. I'm not gonna pay for a name. I just want a good high perfomance tach. So do the big names perform better, or just impress the rice boys? I wanna spend little $ for a good tach.

i'd get an autometer, use the vent slots in the center up by the windshield for painless reversible mounting, make a "hood" to cover it and cut plexiglass to seal in the front of the hump.

Nice. Is that your car? If so how is the visibility on the tach?
I've looked all over for a tach that only has the #'s, etc. on the top half. I only want half a circle coming up out of the hood so my aerodynamic lump will be lower profile. Anyone know where to get one?

Not my car, that is one for sale down here in S. Florida. TII engine in an 82 GSL with the works. The guy wants like 5/6K. Not a bad deal if you ask me, for all thie work involved.

Most tachs are either full sweep (all the way around like a clock) or partial sweep. I think it will be diffucult to find a tach that rev's to 9K tat doesn't go all the way around (full sweep)

Most people place their gauges at angles so the needles point straight up when everything is right.

If you only want it for Racing, why don't you put a quick disconnect plug on it so you can remove it after the track?

thats why i said to use the slots in the center piece. you can just unbolt it and it looks normal. no worry about a hood really since it won't see rain, etc.
