t2 trans swap
I was wondering what kinds of mods are needed to put a tII tranny on a 12a turbo, and also what mods are needed to place the tranny into the 79' SA22 chassis
btw this is my first post, but ive been enjoing this site for months now, and i love the mass of info.

Basically, you need a automatic rear counterweight for a 12A, and an aftermarket flywheel for a TII. 12A's and TIIs have different diameter clutches and ring rears.
Then you need to get a new driveshaft that has the larger TII spline count on one end, and the SA differental flange. Fortunatelu the transmissions are the same length. Call Mazdatrix and talk to henry, they can make a frankenstein driveshaft for you, or call a custom driveshaft shop. Either way expect around $250-350
Then you need a custom tranny mount, not too difficult to make, but still a custom part.
Then there is the shifter location problem that I'm unsure how to solve on a '79. IIRC the SA's had the shifter way forward compared to FB's. The TII tranny has the shifter an extra 20mm further back than the FB tranies, so the shifter would be way off without some serious modification to the shifter housing, or the interior.

thanks for the info, this should help make my swap a more strait forward project. Are there and trannys that came in the sa22 that were stronger than others?Im hoping in the near future to swap a 12a turbo in to my 79' and im lookin for 300-350 bhp/fwhp(after some mods)with out destroying the tranny i choose. am I better off in just going with the tII trans, or any other suggestions

Just stick with the 12a or gsl-se tranny and have it rebuilt at a reputable place . It should last you a long time if you use a light flywheel, 17lbs or less and your torque limit is around 250 ft-lb. I am using the 12a tranny right now and it has been put through some abuse but still feels nice and tight.
