Cool T-stat Question

I just got my victoria British 160 degree Thermostat, and my problem is that is doesn't have that plate to close the bypass valve. I Know everyone always says only use mazda t-stats with the bypass valve plate, but i'm wondering whats the worst that could happen in this case, i figure if the thermostat opens earlier and through the rad is probably the path of least resistance I should be ok. I'm gonna install it tommorrow and if i notice any change in running temp i'll just be switching my old one back in, and i'll be adding a 160 degree T-stat to the for sale section. Victoria british is a pretty reputable company and i figure they must sell a product that works. Thanks guys.

Best regards, Matt

You ever see a Infomercial? or how about a product endorsed by a Movie star or sports athlete? Are they always selling you something that works?

VB t'stat is not a factory T'stat. So do yourself and your car a favor and go run down to the Mazda dealer and buy the correct part. Dont' sell it to somebody else, that is way sad.

If you like to order online then go to Mazdaformance.com

I couldn't be happier with my results. The new T-stat keeps the temp at about 1/6th to 1/5th up the gauge. with my 180 degree mazda thermostat it would sit at 1/4 and rise to just below half on the highway. With this new 160 degree one it stays around 1/5th up the gauge and barely budges going 140 km/h. I also installed new gaskets around the spacer plate below the carb and the rough idle went away. Its been a good morning. one last thing also, the T-stat i bought from victoria british didn't have a jiggle pin, so i drilled a 1/16th hole to compensate.

I got a cheap autozone 180 degree one with no jiggle pin, and mine doesn't overheat at all. Actually, it fixed my overheating problem. Just my 2 cents.

I was about to order one from VB also. The pic in the mag shows the plate.

The RB tips books says to put a 1/2 NPT plug into the bypass hole if you are running a car without a T-stat. I wonder if you could do that?

Please explane the Jiggle pin and where you drilled the hole.

the jiggle pin is just a little hole that lets air pockets escape through the thermostat when the car is warming up, i just drilled the hole in the surround near the actual valve, if that makes sense. and the key is to place the thermostat in a way that the hole is it 12 o'clock straight up. I'm not gonna worry about pluging the bypass, my gauge says that its running very cool, so thats good enough for me. maybe the 180 degree t-stat has the plate, but not the 160 degree one i bought

Thanks for the info.

Jiggle pin = burp hole

I made a mistake RB says a 1/2" Tap and a 1/2" ntp Plug.

I got the same 160 degree t-stat from VB and will not be using it. I also got some rear wheel bearing seals from them that are wrong. So much for a one day LSD swap into my '85!

I bought one of the VB 160 T-stats and put it in this weekend. I did not road test it but it did keep the temp at about 1/3 with the aftermarket guage showing 180. The T-stat did not have the bypass plate. I plan to do a bit more testing using my Fluke to see what the temps are entering and leaving the Rad.
