swapping alterantor, need help with socket markings

Hi guys,
Pretty much self explanatory, I am putting in a refurbished alt (from a '79 I think) into my '81. The problem is that the plug in my car has two prongs on it, while the socket on the 'new' alternator has four. It's labelled with an E, F, N and an A. There is still the B post for the battery, but I have no idea what the other prongs are for, especially since like I said, the plug in the car has two prongs (an L and an R). Please advise, thanks.

I think the early alternators ('79 and maybe '80) used an external voltage regulator, while on the later models the regulator was internal to the alt. It would be much easier to find an alternator that matched your car. Otherwise you need to find an external regulator and figure out how to hook it up (a '79 wiring diagram would probably show you)

Sorry, but the '79 is not going to work. The '79 was the only year to use an external voltage regulator (why it has a different plug). All of the later years used an internal voltage regulator.

Try getting one off of a newer 7. Anything up to '88 will bolt in directly. Get an '87-'88 TII alt if you want a simple upgrade (70 amp). The GSL-SE and '86-'88 NA 2nd gens would also work well (they are 60 amp). I believe the '82 is either 50 or 55 amp.

Good luck.
