Question Swaping axels on a later Rx-7

Just a couple things left to do on my car and it will be pretty much 100% restored. Let me start out by saying I have a 82 rx7. It is equiped with disk brakes in the front and drum in the rear. And I am wanting to take the axel out of a 85 rx7 with the disc brakes in the rear. I think I have to swap the hole axel out and everything. My quesyon is, does everything bolt up to the same place, shocks, springs, axel mounts ect... If not how much modifying would it take. I am definetley doing this but am wondering if will be too complicated before I spend the many hours swaping the two out.

Ok..you want to put your 85 rear end IN your 82?

You have to swap the whole rear end,AND drive shaft,

The drive shaft flange on the 84/85 is bigger so are the axels im not sure if your going to have problems with the E brake cable...you also will need the houses for the Disc rear,3 hoses..

Check out this page:
www.mazspeed.com
Go to the facts section and click on axle swap. It has all the info you need.

Good luck.

Additionally, you need the rear section of the parking brake cables and the master cylinder/proportional valve.

It's a bolt in precedure. Shouldn't take more then a couple hours. Good luck!

The proportional vlave to the master cylinder? Does that mean I need the hole master cylerder? Or is it seperate? And that is what allows the front to do most of the braking, or what equals the braking out on disk breaks?

went to the wreckong yard today and started to pull the axel off. I only got started on it and it took me 5 hours, bu tI guess its my first time. You were right on the e-brake being different, it will take some drilling and mods to make the e-brake cables work, but shouldnt be too hard. I am about 80% done with taking the axel out but have to go back sunday morning to pullk it out and take it home. Very long process though, but I guess its my first time. It takes awhile to see what you need to talk off next but I should get it sunday, The wrecking yard is half off this weekend so Im stoked about that, All together everything will cost about 150, so I quess I cant complain.

Also can someone show me a picture of the proportional valve on the master cylinder. I was looking for it but didnt know what to look for, a picture would be great.

When Im all done, I will be sure to take pictures of durring the process and after so everyone can see.

The proportional valve hangs off one of the master cylinder mounting bolts.
I have a pic if needed, but can't seem to post it. PM me if you want it.

Everything i've read says you need the master cylinder, they are listed as different part numbers, so I would assume they are in fact different. are you guys sure about the prop valve? I was told that is the same, only the master cyl is different.

Took me about hour and 1/2 - 2 hours for the swap, only thing that is different is the e brake cable, besure to get it from the old car you rob the axle from... You only need the cable part that goes through the axle.. The steel cable from the e brake handle to the rear is the same. Everything else is a complete bolt in. You will have to take the pinion flange off you 82 rear end and swap it onto the 85, but thats one big nut, no big deal. You have to do this cause the driveshaft has a bigger yoke on the 85.

84/85 is bigger

If yoru putting a pre 83 rear end in a 84/85 you need the driveshaft too.

If your putting a 84/85 rear in a 83 and older first gen.You need the 84/85 driveshaft.

got the axel and its home, Been cleaning up but for the most part, it looks pretty nice. Brakes and everything is allready on it. I got it off a 85 but the axel says it came off a 84, so the must have changed it.

Second, I got the drive shaft off a 84 so got that taken care of. I know the ebrake cable will take saome mods to make it work, but I took some pictures of how it was on the car, so I dont think it will be too tough. Also I need to know if I need the hole master cylinder to get the porportion valve. Does anyone know, if I need all new brake lines or do those just stay the same caus eI know there is one rubber brake line that comes off the body and then it splitz off into two when it is one the axel.
