Suspenion ?

I was wanting to know who is running Tokico HP's and racing beat springs? This is what I am leading to. I know REspeed makes good products but I dont know how to use coilover so I aint even looking at there products bc they would be a waist ofmoney. Any way give your input.

I am...they are great..i would say the right stiffness..if you are DD it or even if you are on the track..although on the track you might want something stiffer...below..is my car with them installed.

I like the ride height alittle stiffer? Anyone have other springs that might help this. Car is my weekend and track car.

well you cant just get stiffer shocks and not springs, you have to match spring rates and shock rates. There are stiffer springs and adjustable shocks... mazdatrix has some info on spring rates of different companies and illuminas are adjustable (3/5 being equavlent to blues)

I ran RB springs and Illumina shocks last year. I'm upgrading to Respeed coilovers with Illuminas on the front, and adjustable rear spring perchs and Bilstein shocks for the rear.

Respeed has a "Street" version of coilover. No welding needed, and the installation wouldn't be any harder than a front strut swap (which you'll be doing anyway, by the sound of it).

Racing Beat springs will probably raise your car, not lower it (long story, but true). If you really want to have exactly the height you want, and the flexibility of choosing spring rates, then check out the coilovers. Doesn't cost much more than the other option, either.

Like I said though, I started out with the RB springs and the car was way too high for my tastes. Now I'm paying for new suspension once again. I should have done it right the first time, you know what I mean?

me too and couldnt be happier at this point im sure ill move on some day but they're great its a DD and auto-x car and the difference over stock is incredible im not sure if the ST springs are stiffer than racing beat but i think they're a little less expensive. plus they're an inch lower than stock.

This is a good discussion. I'm now planning for my spring overhaul of my GSL-SE suspension. I want to retain stock ride height (maybe 1/2" drop). The 23 year old struts/shocks just aren't up to the task any more, I can feel the rear wanting to step away constantly.

I'd like to go the route of a complete kit, the front strut setup on these cars is kind of weird where the shock is in the strut housing. At least I think it's odd. I wish TEIN and some of the other big names did suspension for our cars. Would this be a good thread to compile a list of suspension sites? I know I'd like to learn as much as I can before I purchase anything.

I'm also going to replace all the bushing/boots on the steering/suspension.

Replacement of all of the original rubber bushings is a very good idea, and makes a big difference in the feel of the car. Add in the idler arm, tie rod ends, and ball joints and it will feel like a new car.

Check out Respeed for the bushings though. I know they carry them, but not sure on pricing. And since they are active members of this forum, and support us with parts that we want that nobody else is making, and have unbelievable customer support, they at least deserve to be considered before ordering from someone else (in my opinion).

I just checked, and Respeed has them beat by $3.00

got rb springs and sway bars (rear bar still sitting on the floor in the garage) urethane bushings with kyb gr2 struts on the front and kyb gas adjust on the rear ride height is about the same as stock, the best I can remember when the car had stock springs. car rides rough mainly due to 205-50-15 tires. never had stock tires so I really can't compare ride. I may upgrade shocks when I change the rear end to a 4.10 rp and turbo 2 brakes. when I installed the shocks and springs on the car about 4 or 5 years ago really didn't want to waste the money because a rx isn't worth anything

Racing Beat springs and anti-roll bars, Tokico Blues (HP). Love this setup. Haven't had it on the track yet. If you drive on a race track enough, then you may want to get the coilovers and have your car corner weighted. It will help the handling.

Aren't you going to auto-x or track the car? Coilovers allow you to get stiffer springs and ones that match your car, so it will be better anyways

Yea but once agian I know nothing about coilovers and am in NO way a tuner I like to set it and forget it. Thats why there NO I would eventhink about adjustable shocks or struts. I fill like buying good name brand products should getme the ride I want and it seems like others like the setup I am going with so I think I am locked in on the HP's and racing beat springs.

Have you ever road a small motorcycle, like maybe a 350 Honda for a long time, and felt like it was just great and you really loved it? And then one day you had the opportunity to try out an 1100 something or other, and that little 350 was just never the same for you ever again?....

Anyway, you're doing no worse than following my own example so I certainly can't fault you for your decision. lol. Have fun with your project man.

coilovers are easy. instal them, then loosen up the locking bolt deal. then use a spanning wrench and to adjust your height up or down. make sure your on a level surface and pick a spot on the body to measure on both sides of the car (I used to use the frame) to make sure your keep both sides the same height from the ground, retighten the lock bolt deal and your good to go.

I have RB springs and Tokico HP's, and I love it. I daily drive the car in summers, and I track it as often as I can. Track performance is ok. However, if you have anything more then a stock-port engine, on the track you may find the RB system lacking. I don't have the RB sway bars, but I am sure they would help alot as well. One thing I noticed on my car is that the lowering springs raised it for a while. Eventualy the front sttled down to RB advertised lowering rate. However, the rear is still high up. I personaly like it that way from a performance view. You get snap oversteer when the rear suspension locks up. More height in the rear means more travel and thus less likly to lock up rear suspension. For the record I set my car up quite unconventionaly. I however, love the way she handles.

I think the street coilovers would be better though. They are ajustable and you can get more spring rates to suite your various driving needs. The RB springs are one note symphonies. I will probably keep my RB springs for a while though. I like them, and they are cheap.

Best of luck

The easiest way to deal with coilovers is to set them to the ride height you want and then take it to a performance shop to do the corner weighting. Set and forget from there. Unless your only tracking the car, you won't need to adjust anything from there. If your tracking the car alot it would serve you well to do the best you can with the suspension, and take the time to learn how to adjust it to perform the way you want it to. More cars win with a proper suspension set up then just tossing power at it, so that's one of the most important aspects of track car performance.
