Street-Port Pics

Just another update on my car, all the intake ports are done. I may smooth the runners some, but they are done Exhaust ports will be done on monday. These were all done with a 28,000rpm dye grinder and a nasty carbide bit. First two took 1.5hrs each. 3rd took 45mins, the 4th took 20mins and ended up looking the best too

Looks great coldy, i'm looking forward to seeing what kind of power you are going to put down with your new weber setup and streetported motor. Keep up the good work!

I didn't think it was hard at all. I started with a 30,000rpm dremel, but it didn't work very well, and would have taken a long time. So I took the housings into the shop my dad works at and used one of their grinders. Made it a lot easier and faster.

It should work great A lot of the time I didn't have mine at full speed since it wanted to walk out when spinning that fast. A bridge port will be a bit harder to do, just take your time and be careful with it and it'll come out nice. I was suprised how sweet mine came out, since these were the first ports I had ever done, didn't even practice on any bad housings first.

Did you use the dye grinder to do the whole port, or did you drill part of it out first or something?

I used a dye grinder for all of it. For a bridge through, you drill out the bridge part of it before you start grinding the bridge.

For your 1st time, they look great.

Did you use a template? Your primaries looks too large.
Also, you NEED to sand down the ports, and smooth and taper them.

I did use a template, primaries and secondaries are the same size. The plated don't need lapped. There are no grooves worn into them. The plate in the last pic just has a bit of carbon on it, it'll sand right off.

Was the template for a 12A?

Is it supposed to be the same template for
the primary and secondaries? Or did you
just use the same template for both?

I dunno on the 12A, but I just street-ported my engine,
and the primaries are definately smaller that the secondaries.

If I go larger on the primaries, I will hit water..

Hmmm.. Maybe it's because I have an 86+ engine?

Well you are supposed to have the primaries smaller if you want any low-end torque. But on 86+ NA if you go too high on primaries you will hit water really quickly b/c of the EGR port.

The template was actually for a TII. I still have a little bit of room to go a bit farther, but not much. I used the same template for primaries and secondaries. I didn't think it really mattered if I made the primaries smaller, because I'm using a Weber carb. All 4 ports will be getting flow all the time, instead of with a 4barrel carb, the promaries open first, then the secondaries.

Those housings look like they've gotten hot. Is that typical of used turbo housings, the bottom half? or?

Actually, it's just a little carbon and oil.
They need to be cleaned up a little.

The engine was in immaculate (brand new) condition,
except for the apex and side seals.

The engine did have significant carbon build-up.
Probably because it was originally on an automatic
Cosmo car, and they never really ragged on it.

Nice! I 'raised the roof' of the ports on my R5 plates as high as I could. The port timing itself is somewhere between mild and extended. They're as large inside as I could get them. Primaries and secondaries are the same height (12A or 13B old school four port baby!)

It looks like you could raise your 'roof' a mm or two more. How close were you to the water jacket?

I laid a piece of paper over an old twin-dizzy RX-2 port and used that as my template. It had been ported many years ago with Racing Beat templates, I suppose. I liked the port shape, so I copied it. You'd probably be better off with a real Racing Beat template.
