Strange steering issue
Hey so I have a strange problem. When I turn to the right or to the left it turns then lunges really hard to the same direction that I turned. Just replaced my steering box with a known good unit. Checked ball joints, ok. Could bad bushings cause this? Alignment? Ive aligned it as best I can in my garage, but I've never known toe to cause this situation. Someone? Anyone?

Ill check out how the struts are mounted, there is a slight clunk on the right side sometimes. Your steering problem was the same thing? Turn one way and it lunges you then try to center and it is off feeling? Thanks for the link

Ball joints can be tough to diagnose correctly. Usually when you have that "lunging" feeling, it is related to ball joints.
But, to eliminate other possibilities, put the front end up on ramps so you can crawl under there and watch all of the connections for sloppy movement while an assistant gently moves the steering wheel back and forth (not enough to turn the wheels, but enough to pick up the slack).

The "lunge" is what happens when the wheels aren't turning in a coordinated way; one wheel is entering the turn later than the other, so the wheels are working at crossed purposes until the second wheel turns in, then suddenly they are reinforcing the turn instead of fighting each other.
Anything that prevents the steering parallelogram from staying rigid, or the wheels from staying true to it, can cause it. All the above suggestions are good starting places.

I have checked play via watching when someone lightly turns the wheel, nothing out of the ordinary there. Could incorrect toe or caster do this? And using that string method of alignment, how much closer together is the rear track then the front, how much space should i leave between the rear wheels.

Found it!! One wheel toe in, one toe out. Not to mention only 1 1/4 turns to the right and 1 3/4 turns to the left. Need to re-center everything. Thanks for all the advice guys, happy motoring!
