strange grinding noise at high rpm

im going crazy trying to figure this noise out.

my car has a grinding/slapping noise around 6-8k, hard to explain really. i have replaced the tranny and it has new fluid.

could this be chatter?

its a 83 gsl with 4pt 13B swap and S4 tranny

You shouldn't be routinely revving a stock-built motor much past 6k... that's probably the car gritting its teeth.

i totally agree.

but it's definitly not a stock built motor...

also. the noise only occurs under heavy load. ie. 2-5th gear 6-8k rpms

what kind of oil pressure are you seeing at that rev range?

Cheek and see if the timing is to high. Under high RPM and hard loads, It could be high end rotor knocking from timing to high. Hope this helps you. Your rotary friend Josh.

looks like he has a S5 engine, they should have no problem around 6k even up to 8k

Have you ever had any heat issues with this engine? It's kinda weird that three springs on just one rotor would lose strength at the same time.

... you are scaring the crap out of me actually dude..

i just recently purchased an 1990 rx 7 with a swapped out 13b engine. turbo..
the first day i didn't have any problems with it. but the second, it started to do what your describing...

let me get this straight, under high load, once the turbo has given its power, something starts to click. you can feel it in your feet and you loose a lot of power right?

i thought it was just timing... i disconnected the trailing plugs, a site that had just recently done some research on rotary engines said it only needs the lead plugs to run properly.. it has been running really smooth with about 80% power..
but if it's the springs, i don't think i can afford to be running it anymore..
Is there a chance that it could still be the timing??

could be, i had these symptoms before i lost compression in the front rotor, about 3 months before... try the timing before its too late!!

never had heat issues with this motor. always ran around 190 +/- and never leaked coolant. pretty strange to me too.

one thing i did notice is that it doesn't have the dual spring like it should.

i'll be putting it back together today.
