strange fuel starvation issue after several minutes of running

ok my dads 83 gsl is having very strange problems latly.

basicly we put a new engine in the car , and by idiot methods i will not name rusty water got into the gas tank.... the car was ran like this for a couple days with out knowing till now...

car ran fine the first couple days... but now we have drained the rusty fuel, and replaced the fuel filter and tried to clean out hte carb but we have having issues...

the car will start up cold and run perfectly for about 5-7 minutes, or untill warm then it will die.and act like its starving for fuel. car wont hardly start and if it does it will rev up in neutral but wont idle, but if u try to move it will die out like your out of fuel...

now if still warm, if u let the car sit for 10 minutes it will start up and idle at 900 for about 5 more minutes then die out and act like its starved for fuel again...

when the condition occures, i have checked all the spark and the ingitores and coils are working... leaving me to belive this is a fuel related issue..

does this sound like a cause of a carb that gets plugged up when run for a bit? or could there be something else that would cause this

sounds like the water could have effected the fuel pump, you should flow test it. or unhool it and see how it works, after it stalls out.

I've been having "gunk in the fuel tank" problems (car sat for 13 years), so I put a clear filter at the carburetor so I can check fuel flow, and to further protect the carb frum gunk. Before I did this, I managed to get about a 1/2 inch of the stuff in the float bowls. That caused some interesting problems... It will currently fill up the fuel filter at the fuel pump with rust/gunk after aboout a mile of driving. This is after having the tank boilded out at a radiator shop. I just bought the kit to marine clean, etch, and seal the gas tank.

I agree with perfect_circle on this one. I had a pump fail once, only because I had a 5-9psi carter/airtex pump regulated at 2.5psi without the fuel return. I ran it like this for a few months and it failed when I was 45 minutes away from home.
The pump could also fail after sucking through a clogged filter, and the water present wouldn't help any.
