Straight pipe? How loud?
I've got a bone stock 83 GS... It's got a minor exhaust leak as it is, and I feel that the super restrictive stock system isn't exactly letting all the horses run free, either. If I get the RB header, how much/where could I get the rest of the piping for no cats/muffler?
Also, how loud will it be? I mean obviously I'm not going to intentionally be pegging off the limiter around any cops, but is a straight pipe streetable if you drive conservatively?
I'm in MN, if that helps anyone.

Most people would not like it. It's truly loud. Really really really loud. I've known a few who can stand a rotary with no muffling, but they are few and far between. I tell you, it's much louder than a straight piped piston engine. If you were to search "quiet exhaust" here on the forum search, you'd see that getting these bad boys quiet is quite difficult. Especially NA.
There are many many people who piece their own systems together, and only a few are satisfied.
An off the shelf racingbeat system gives a very good balance between power and noise, but it's pricey. Also more power is to be had with different gear.
You will find tons of threads saying something like "I have 3 mufflers on my car and it's still too loud for my taste!! What do I do??" So that might give you an idea what a straight pipe might be like.

I, personally, wouldn't be bothered by an unmuffled rotary, I love the raw sound of engine exhaust, no matter how loud... Try standing next to a 1200+ horsepower tractor engine without an exhaust system!
What I want to know is, would I get away with streeting it? Or would I be getting fix it tickets from all the cops I cruise on by?

Start with a used header, maybe get lucky at the wrecker and see the difference (you will feel a difference!). I have tried a variety of mufflers and custom exhaust but racing beat is still #1 for me. All depends on your budget.

More than happy with my custom header and RB 'street port' 81-82 muffler. Sooo quiet for my big port 12A, specially since the header collecter is 4".
I like loud too, don't get me wrong, but on the street it gets annoying.
You have no idea how loud a unmuffled rotary is. Specially one that is heavily ported. It sounds great, but when your ears are bleeding..

I'm going down this route right now, I have straight pipe with stock muffler.... you don't want that route. it makes you think the car is a giant tin can with wheels. nobody will not not notice you driving it around. I just did it because I was curious after reading how bad it was on here to most.

That RB sp muffler has a 2 into 1 collector, collected to 2.375"("ID"I believe).
So you cut the collector off? I have read on this forum that setup(collected header, collector cut off muffler) has acceptable sound levels. What does your 4" collector collect into, what size?
I had a collected RB header, RB pre-silencer, 81 stock muffler, too loud for me, and most every one that heard it. I "made" an additional strait through muffler after the RB pre-silencer to make it acceptable.

My rule: if it gives me headaches when I drive it, it's too loud! I do not consider a straight pipe streetable in any way, shape, or form. Even with a stock exhaust manifold. And even if the cops don't care.
As for sources for the header, just stay away from Pacesetter. Racing Beat is good if you do a custom 2.5" collector.

Racing beat's full system is 745 before shipping. I would love to be able to spend roughly 400 on an exhaust system rather than 800+ (shipping)
I drove a car (granted it was a 4banger, not a rotary) for about 4 months with a huge leak right at the end of the header... it really didn't bother me. If I could get the RB header, and then straight pipe to the stock muffler, would that make it a bit more tolerable to innocent bystanders?

oh and a piston car with an exhaust leak < unmuffled rotary. i have numerous examples, but perhaps the best to say that the videos dont convey how loud they are.

the Rx7 is so loud you can't really hear it.
