Straight header with no damage?

Straight header with no damage?
I'm just about ready to install a new engine, and was consurned about running or driving the car on straight headers. I know on a piston engine you can damage the exhaust valves running straight headers, but does anyone know about the rotary? I would be driving the car about 5 miles to the muffler shop.

First time I reved a 12a with headers only, in the shop, hit 7k, my ears rang for 10 mins, and they are as old as I am.
Won't hurt the motor, but it will hurt your ears and really **** off the neighbors.

No Valves to burn, Oops Oh yeah its not a PISSed On engine
Only thing that will get hurt, is your wallet when the cops pull you over
seriously where a set of ear plugs, and a set of full ear muffs as you are going to need the protection for your ears.
Oh and if you get a backfire, don't have a heart attack!

Just stuff a couple of stray cats up there, that will muffle the exhaust noise some. Of course, the screaming and yowling from the cats might cause other issues. Take ear plugs or go faster than the speed of sound....
If a cop stops you and complains, just say "What???"

I wore full ear muffs to drive my header only 12A 10min accross town to the custom exhaust guy, and I had a headache after.
But the look on peoples facese when they looked at the car and saw me sitting there was worth it

Thanks guys, I knew that it would be loud as all hell. I've got the ear plugs and muffs. Man, people are going to flip when the hear me coming down the road. The engine is a street port 4 port 13b. Just slapped it together last night, hopefully it'll run.

You have no idea how loud these puppies are unill you hear one run open header.
Espesially a oprted engin.
My exhaust guy has been sraching his head for a week on how to make my non ported 12A (1.1L) quiet enough to be street legal.
All this guy does is hot rod exhausts.
He has tried all of his V8 tricks and NONE of them have worked.
The Power Pulse Presilencers are on there way as we speak...
Displacement has nothing to do with the noise it is all about engin design...

On my old 79 I was driving when the exhaust pipe right after the header rusted though driving at around 60mph or so. Ran it at 2k rpms or so to nearest exhaust shop. Sure they heard me coming.
To test what this sounds like, take your chainsaw into a dumpster (cover closed) and rev the **** out of it.

Sounds like I'm going to have a great time tuning the carb. If the carb isn't already some what tuned, I might end up towing the car to the muffler shop. Or risk being shot by my neighbors.

um like how far away do your neighbors live? cause if its less than a 100 yards, i don't know that you will have time to hide from them when they come after you with a shotgun....

how long could you drive on a open header before its not good (besides sound wise) because i am trying to fab up a custom 3in exghust and by the time i get my header from RB which i ordered thursday i dont think i will be able to fab it up before a rx7 meeting and might end up driving there either open headers or half way atleast to the axle.....lol
could any damage or power loses be done by only running the piping to the rear tire and coming out the side? somebody on here has that setup but never got me pictures...?
my friend was saying how really a rotary is like a inline 6 because 6 rotor faces etc.... is he somewhat right?

Fire is the biggest concern. With the rotary naturally quite able to spit flames out of a full exhaust i would be worried about catching the bottom of my car on fire.
could make a side dump pipe for temp use.

my friend ran his '83 with no headers at all for 1/8 mile drags. its loud. ive done it before too....
i dont see a prob with heat for running in short periods like races, but otherwise keep that exhaust on....

Holy moly, i've had exaust gaskets blow on my standard manifold between my pre-cat, and dear lord, it was loud, i work for domino's and i delivered so many pizza's with the gaskets blown.... i would turn the music up to practically full volume, just in attempts to drown out the negative tin can sound, both for me, and for everyone else, with some positive noise, if my music can be considered positive, but isn't it still noise?
Make sure to check your exhaust mounting hardware, especially if its still stock and you have 210k miles and still going on your car (30k on new 12a engine, mwuah ha ha) aka, your lock washers thay keep your precat bolted with your exaust gaskets to your manifold, they might just become washers , and you'll blow your exhaust gaskets, letting your nut disapear. Then if you run too long, your exhaust flanges might have warped.

altf4 is right your biggest concern would be the heat on the bottom of your car (especially if you undercoated it) that wouldn't be fun if you caught the undercoating on fire now would it
